Objectives

The project's initiators were a group of schoolchildren - pupils in grades 7 and 8 from Primary School No. 3 in Augustów and Primary School No. 2 in Augustów, as well as from the surrounding neighbourhood. These are people we work with on a daily basis in our Society. The group included slightly more girls (about 60%) than boys. As it turned out, our charges are still feeling the effects of being confined to their homes after the pandemic. These are mainly the effects of the issue of physical inactivity during this period - young people had limited access to physical activity, which unfortunately translated directly into their weight (increased) and physical capacity and performance (significantly decreased). Unfortunately, these effects were still being felt, it is not easy for young people to get rid of excess weight, and it is difficult to build a habit of consistent physical activity. When we started talking to our charges about these issues, it turned out that they didn't really see the problem - for them it was normal to sit at home and only do sports during gym class (which was practically non-existent for 1.5 years). These discussions inspired “our” youth group to investigate the topic of health, healthy eating and exercise in the lives of teenagers. As a result of various discussions with their peers, a mini poll among their classmates, our young people felt that it was very important to make their classmates aware of the importance of movement and healthy eating. Around these conversations, we started to encourage the group to build the idea of a youth exchange around this idea. And so after several meetings, the idea for this project was born. What the young people pointed out, which is very important in the whole aspect of healthy living, is the issue of habits - mere knowledge and awareness of the need for a healthy lifestyle is not enough until these practices are put into practice, so the aspect of habit formation, brain work in this area was also discussed during the exchange. We learnt about the mechanism of habit formation and, based on this, we implemented healthy practices, this was an important outcome of the exchange. Thanks to our contacts, we managed to find an organisation in Lithuania whose charges were also interested in this topic. After several online meetings prior to the exchange, both groups finally clarified the scope of topics they wanted to address during the exchange. In addition to physical health issues, issues of mental health and self-acceptance were added - the young people themselves noticed that these aspects were also important for them and their peers. The objectives our young people set were: - to develop methods of taking care of health in different aspects: physical, mental, healthy eating - finding ways to effectively develop habits related to taking care of health - creating a publication (booklet)- collecting methods of taking care of health and habits, how to put these methods into practice - learning how to compose healthy meals, so that they are tasty, healthy and cheap - finding reliable places on the Internet, where you can gain knowledge and inspiration - websites, YouTubers, Tiktokers - getting to know each other's cultures - Polish and Lithuanian. - developing language skills - English was the language of exchange and daily contacts.
