During the project we raised awareness on combating stigma related to mental health problems (practicing solutions/actions supporting mental health among young people). We educated ourselves on mental health, defined the concept of mental health and understood its impact on our general well-being. We learned to combat stigma and discrimination towards people with mental health problems mainly by developing empathy and understanding the subject. During the youth exchange we started a dialogue on mental health, which allowed us to share experiences and observations on mental health, understand different perspectives related to this topic. We realized the importance of taking care of our own mental health and exchanged ideas on how to deal with stress and difficulties. During the youth exchange we understood that mental health is a state of mental balance that allows us to function effectively, cope with life challenges, and maintain healthy social relationships. We learned that mental health is not limited to the absence of disorders, but also includes positive emotional experiences and the ability to adapt to changes in life. We focused on the problem of 160 million EU population suffering from mental disorders (depression, anxiety disorders, substance abuse disorders), fears, anxieties and depression related to the destructive effects of the pandemic, the war in Ukraine, the climate crisis, unemployment, rising living costs, the pressure of digitalization and social media. We realized that mental health plays a key role in the development process of every person and the ability to reach their full potential. We learned that a healthy mental life means not only the absence of mental disorders, but also developing the ability to cope with stress, building a positive sense of self-esteem, establishing healthy interpersonal relationships and developing mental flexibility. We analyzed the issue related to the fact that every second young European declares that their mental health needs are not fully met, and in a number of EU countries, the percentage of young people who reported symptoms of depression during the pandemic has more than doubled. We learned about the provisions of the EU Youth Strategy on mental health and formulated conclusions on how to implement these recommendations in our lives. We understood what the EU is promoting programs that reduce stigma, increase awareness and improve access to mental health services, which lead to the creation of a society in which young people will feel comfortable seeking help and support in case of such need. We learned that unfortunately over 25% of people with mental illnesses are young people aged 18-25, so our peers, which we must admit shocked us a little. We recognized the main problems among young people, namely stigma and lack of awareness about mental health and ignorance about where to seek help. We realized that because young people often experience stigma related to mental health problems, it leads to ignoring the first symptoms of this phenomenon and delaying seeking help. We understood that lack of awareness about mental health and high social pressure often leads to excessive stress and an increased risk of mental health problems among young people. We have deeply analyzed the fact that self-harm and suicidal thoughts (this problem affects ⅓ of young people) are the most common cause of death among teenagers. We have made a commitment to work to support the mental health of young people by seeking the integration of activities of various institutions, both at the national and European level and at the level of the third sector (NGO). Through participation in the project, we understood that we want to address the difficult but very important topic of mental health of young people, among others through education on healthy mental functioning, and promotion of an environment that is conducive to healthy emotional development. We realized that 1) mental health problems affect various areas of our lives, shaping our relationships, self-esteem, sense of identity and meaning in life 2) we often avoid confronting these problems, which leads to the deterioration of the situation. Now, after participating in the project, we know that despite the fact that working on the topic of mental health seems difficult, we need it, because it is by understanding this topic that we can raise awareness and combat stigmatization.
