Objectives

The concept of the project “CAMP – Creative Academy for Movie Producers” emerged from meetings and discussions among young people planning their future careers in the film industry. The initiative group consisted of young filmmakers – mainly aspiring creative producers and directors – who met in October 2023 during the 10th edition of the WAMA Film Festival in Olsztyn. During meetings and joint discussions, the young creators identified two main problems related to their artistic development, which limit their ability to carry out artistic activities on an international scale: - the European film market is dominated by major Hollywood studios, and creative exchange between individual European countries is insufficient; - young filmmakers have very limited knowledge about opportunities for international cooperation and European mechanisms supporting their artistic development, and there is also a lack of educational centers offering this type of training. The participants clearly stated that the educational task related to developing international cooperation among emerging European filmmakers must be fulfilled by a different structure, such as a non-formal education program aimed at exchanging experiences that would enable participants to acquire both theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary for their future creative development within the European film market. The next meeting of the youth initiative group took place in November 2023 during the CINEMAFORUM in Warsaw. Taking advantage of the fact that meetings of young filmmakers from around the world are held annually in Olsztyn in the autumn, the initiative group decided to organize a project titled “CAMP – Creative Academy for Movie Producers” – a unique international youth exchange addressed to young European creative producers and film directors, dedicated to modern methods of developing film projects and implementing new standards of sustainable audiovisual production in Europe. The project was based on peer-to-peer education among emerging filmmakers, fostering the exchange of experiences and the development of cooperation among debuting artists from various European countries. In planning their initiative, the young organizers chose to focus on searching for, exchanging, and presenting – at one time and in one place – knowledge and methodologies related to modern and pioneering processes of creative film production functioning in different European cinematographies, particularly in the context of supporting and developing young film talents. The project initiators concluded that only by creating an initiative serving as a European platform for cooperation among young filmmakers could a genuine space for development be established – one that would provide momentum and enable them to move beyond the limitations associated with individual national film industries. It is precisely in transnational activities carried out within the framework of European cooperation that young people interested in developing their future in the audiovisual sector see not only their individual prospects, but also the future of European cinema. According to the project’s concept, each CAMP participant, by sharing their experience and knowledge, was to contribute to strengthening the project’s multicultural character. This grassroots initiative by young filmmakers aimed to enhance their future professional competences and to become a real stimulus for the development of young European cinema. The program designed within the project focused not only on developing creative skills but also on acquiring practical experience and knowledge about the process of creative film production and the relationship between the creative producer and the director. In contrast to the traditional hierarchical “producer–director” model, this relationship was conceived as a partnership, in which young filmmakers form producer–director creative duos and jointly work on the development of original projects. In the participants’ vision, the CAMP project was intended not only to expand their knowledge and experience regarding new models of film production and implementation, but also to foster artistic passion and motivation, enhance intercultural awareness, and strengthen European dialogue among young filmmakers. The project was designed to enable filmmakers to navigate the European market effectively and to engage in thoughtful artistic cooperation – thus aligning with the objectives of educational mobility under the Erasmus+ programme. An extremely important aspect of the project’s implementation was also the exploration, analysis, and promotion of green film production standards, consistent with sustainable development policies. These standards constitute a necessary response to climate threats, while also representing a practical requirement in the context of the budgetary constraints faced by young creators and producers.
