The project “Building Sustainable Future”, coordinated by Fundacja Młodzi dla Europy and supported by the Polish National Agency of Erasmus+ (FRSE), addressed the need to better equip youth workers and educators to respond to climate change as a complex social challenge. We responded to young people’s growing eco-anxiety by shifting emphasis from ecological “footprint” to positive “handprint” actions and by strengthening the digital and sustainability competences of educators (in line with DigCompEdu and inspired by GreenComp). The main activity of the project - the training course, took place on 02–10 April 2025, bringing together 27 participants from Poland, Latvia, Sweden, Greece, Romania, Italy, Turkey, and Spain. Using non-formal methods as well as innovative methodologies like LEGO® Serious Play® and Design Sprint—we fostered creative problem-solving, peer learning, and the co-creation of youth-led sustainability initiatives in order to respond to the above mentioned challenges. What we wanted to achieve (objectives) We aimed to strengthen the capacity of youth workers and educators to engage young people in meaningful climate and environmental action. Specifically we aimed: -to exchange insights about the lived experiences within educator communities and address the obstacles encountered by the youth concerning climate change, environmental learning, and the mastery of sustainable skills -to contemplate strategies that enhance the active involvement of young individuals in initiatives that foster community growth with a focus on sustainability and environmental safeguarding -to inspire educators working with the youth to adopt forward-thinking approaches to sustainability issues, encouraging the generation of inventive solutions that amplify the effectiveness of initiatives led by the young, aimed at nurturing their sustainability skills (inspired by the GreenComp framework) -to identify and tackle the individual hurdles faced in environmental education and navigate the complex issues surrounding sustainability -to play a part in the growth and fortification of communities through the promotion of sustainability and environmental consciousness via initiatives driven by the youth -to initiate novel community projects designed to elevate the sustainability acumen of the youth -to acquire innovative methodologies that aid in fostering and advising youth-driven projects, utilizing tools like Lego Serious Play and design thinking principles.
