Objectives

This project was entirely built and grounded on objectives 1 (Promote civic and democratic participation among local and international youth) and 2 (Support entrepreneurship, initiative, and the creation of projects and ideas) of our 2023-27 Strategic Plan, approved in Accreditation. We wanted to act directly on several of the needs of our young community, particularly the apathy and lack of interest typical of this generation, and the disbelief that the community has in them, which consequently excludes them from active life and decisions in local society. This is one of the main pillars of our entire strategy and vision: through youth action, empowerment, and training, to change the community, contribute to solving local problems, and create a future for young people in the region. This civic engagement and participation is the first and crucial step in instilling our mindset in local youth, mobilizing them to our efforts and stimulate their independent action and creation of new visions and ideas for intervention in local needs, influencing their desire to create a future for themselves here and to be the ones to shape the future of this region: voting, acting, participating, getting involved, giving their voice, and creating movements, projects, initiatives, and decision-making forums based on local youth. In this second year of Accreditation, and after a first year dedicated to environmental action, we focused this project on civic, democratic, and social participation and youth entrepreneurship, aiming to create a wave of projects and ideas for action and local development and to begin to instill in our local and international youth the concept of taking action and solving the problems of their communities and being active voices for a future in them. The aim is to encourage young people to value and connect with their region, to get involved in local decision-making processes, and to empower them (and the professionals who support them) with the tools to make their community their home, creating the services and opportunities they feel are lacking there. This topic is one that unites the youth groups in our partner network, with various entities working in their communities in the same way as we do and identifying the same type of problems and obstacles to the active participation and involvement of their youth: The lack of support, credibility, resources, and knowledge to increase their impact and role in local society, discrimination based on social context, and the lack of tools for participation, cooperation between groups, mobilization and inclusion of new young people, and effective communication and implementation of ideas created by local youth groups. As an organization that leads some of the largest youth participation programs in Trás-os-Montes (our Environmental Intervention Militias and Action Academy involve more than 200 young people from Chaves), our vision for this project was to involve new groups of young people, both local and international, in our strategy of action and participation to address the problems of our communities; connect them for joint work, support, and sharing of experiences among themselves; and empower them with examples, tools, technical knowledge, and attitudes so that they can replicate the actions and programs we lead in our city in their communities, creating new hubs of action in eight different countries. Thus, the specific objectives for this project were: - Promote intercultural contact and build a network of young people with the same energy, ideas, and purpose for action - Improve the capacity for mobilization, engagement, and inclusion of new young people from partner organizations, especially those with fewer opportunities - Share best practices and good examples among youth communities - Equip young people with the right tools to be agents of change and solve local problems themselves - Provide young people and partner technicians with the right tools, methods, and information to increase their impact on the local community - Encourage young people to participate in civic, democratic, and environmental movements and get involved in decisions in their local society - Encourage young people to develop an active and entrepreneurial spirit to create their own opportunities, movements, and projects - Increase their ability to communicate and mobilize other young people around their ideas - Provide information about all programs, entities, and support available to young people - Promote a greater sense of initiative, proactivity, and active citizenship in local society - Encourage the appreciation of young people and bring new attention and credibility to their voices and ideas - Affirm the importance of youth participation in building the future of local societies - Promote a sense of European citizenship in the communities involved
