Objectives

The main purpose of the Hike Safely with History activity was to promote the involvement, connection and empowerment of young people through non-formal and intercultural learning experiences. Its implementation sought to create concrete opportunities for active participation, personal and social development, and the strengthening of European awareness, particularly among young people from more isolated geographical and social contexts. More specifically, this exchange and its preparatory visit aimed to: 1) Promote the involvement, connection and empowerment of young people throughout all phases — planning, implementation, evaluation and dissemination. Young people were active participants throughout the process, contributing to the definition and implementation of activities. Through the use of non-formal education methodologies and collaborative dynamics, the activity provided a space for participatory learning, talent exploration and the development of personal and social skills, seeking to stimulate critical thinking, a sense of responsibility and autonomy, and enabling meaningful learning that could be transferred to the participants' daily lives and academic or professional futures. Intercultural contact also enhanced the diversity of perspectives and enriched the individual and collective learning process. 2) Promote inclusive and equitable opportunities through non-formal and informal methodologies to reduce barriers. The activities prioritised inclusion and equal opportunities, integrating young people from different backgrounds and realities, particularly those with fewer opportunities. On the one hand, the aim was to encourage interaction between participants with different life experiences, in order to value diversity and promote empathy and mutual understanding. On the other hand, the aim was to create conditions for young people with geographical, economic, social or cultural barriers to participate fully, ensuring logistical, pedagogical and emotional support. In this way, the project contributed to breaking down barriers to access, stimulating intercultural dialogue and strengthening the sense of belonging to a diverse, supportive and collaborative European community. This inclusive approach resulted in a balanced and transformative learning experience, where all participants were able to share, learn and grow together. 3) To foster the sharing of knowledge, practices, experiences and skills among young people and organisations active in the youth field, with a view to strengthening cooperation and joint learning between young people and the organisations involved, the exchange created spaces for dialogue, reflection and co-learning, promoting the exchange of good practices, working methods and innovative youth intervention strategies. The activities were thus designed to stimulate peer communication, teamwork and the creation of sustainable collaboration networks between European organisations. By involving partners in all stages — from preparation to dissemination — the collective capacity to develop joint and innovative actions based on shared values and common objectives was strengthened. In summary, Hike Safely with History contributed to the comprehensive development of young people, strengthening their skills and European awareness; promoted inclusion and equal opportunities; and consolidated cooperation between youth organisations at local, national and European level. It thus translated the fundamental principles of the Erasmus+ programme into concrete practices of participation, active citizenship and intercultural solidarity.
