Objectives

Our UNMMUTED project took place in Soajo, Portugal from August 21-31, 2024, our project aimed to address critical challenges young people face in expressing and managing their emotions while building cross-cultural understanding. WHY UNMMUTED was and continues important: The project emerged from the recognized need of addressing the stigmas surrounding mental health among young Europeans, particularly in expressing their emotions and seeking help, and understanding how to seek help. Statistical evidence from participating countries showed increasing rates of anxiety, depression, and emotional suppression among youth aged 18-30 Participants recognised that the pandemic's impact had further isolated young people, creating more barriers to emotional expression and mental well-being which continues to be visible today. Our core objectives were: • Create safe spaces for participants to explore and understand their emotional state. • Implement innovative methods to develop emotional awareness and self-expression skills. • Give a safe space where participants could recognize and process their emotions through creative, outdoor and artistic approaches. • Foster dialogue between participants from different cultural backgrounds about emotional expression and allow them to see commonalities amongst them. • Break down cultural barriers in discussing mental health and emotional well-being - breaking stigmas through presentations and discussions. • Create a supportive participant based community for them to share experiences and coping strategies. • Equip participants with concrete tools for emotional expression and management. • Develop their communication skills for discussing mental health openly. • Prepare participants to become mental health advocates once they returned home. • maintain a sustainable network for peer continued emotional support and resource sharing. • Develop practical materials and methodologies for future youth workers to use in their work when it comes to emotional expression. Through these carefully structured objectives, UNMMUTED aimed to create lasting impact on participants' ability to express, understand, and manage their emotions while building cross-cultural bridges and reducing mental health stigma across European communities.
