Our AI4YOU(th) project was conceived in response to the urgent need to equip young people with the knowledge, attitudes and skills to become critically involved in the rapid integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into all aspects of society. As AI systems increasingly influence democratic processes, social interaction, access to information and future employability, it is essential that young people not only understand AI, but also actively shape its ethical development. The main aim of the project was to promote digital empowerment and active citizenship through a high-quality youth exchange, using non-formal education to develop skills, digital literacy and intercultural dialogue between 36 young people from Portugal, Armenia, Austria, Bulgaria, Latvia and Poland, of these, 20 participants were identified as coming from fewer opportunities backgrounds, including those facing geographical isolation, economic challenges, or social barriers. The specific objectives of the project were: To develop a Youth Exchange that equipped 36 young people with a fundamental understanding of Artificial Intelligence, including its societal impact, practical uses, and ethical challenges, the programme offered workshops and group activities on topics such as neural networks, automation, data protection, and the ethical regulation of AI. To teach participants how to use essential digital tools, including ChatGPT, Canva, Trello, Google Workspace, Europass, and introductory coding platforms, and these tools were integrated through experiential learning tasks aimed at boosting personal autonomy and digital competence. To foster ethical reflection and responsible tech use by promoting critical thinking through debates, simulations, and role-play activities. Participants discussed real-world dilemmas and engaged in co-creating ethical guidelines for AI systems aligned with democratic values and human rights. Although originally planned, the objective of demystifying blockchain and cryptocurrencies was not fully achieved, as the facilitation team decided to prioritize deeper discussions on digital literacy, AI ethics, and European opportunities. This allowed for a more focused and meaningful engagement with the core themes of the project.. To promote good digital habits and mental well-being, by encouraging discussions around digital presence, the risks of online behavior, and strategies to maintain a healthy relationship with technology in a fast-paced digital society. To connect youth with European opportunities, presenting Erasmus+, Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs, and the European Solidarity Corps as accessible programmes for personal and professional development. To create and launch the “AI4You” Digital Literacy Campaign, a 12-day youth-led social media campaign developed during the exchange. It was implemented simultaneously in all six countries and reached an estimated audience of well over 8,000 young people, promoting responsible AI use, digital awareness, and EU youth values. To foster intercultural understanding and solidarity, by bringing together participants from diverse social, economic, and cultural backgrounds. The exchange promoted shared learning, mutual respect, and active citizenship rooted in the core values of democracy, inclusion, and European identity. To support youth in becoming architects of their own lives, strengthening transversal life skills such as resilience, adaptability, collaboration, and problem-solving, to better prepare them for the challenges of a rapidly evolving world. Our project was intentionally designed to be as inclusive as possible, ensuring the participation of young people from diverse social, economic and cultural backgrounds, and to this end the Erasmus+ program's Inclusion and Diversity Strategy was applied, adopting accessible methodologies, facilitating intercultural exchange and empowering participants with fewer opportunities to take on leadership roles throughout the project. And by promoting critical digital citizenship and participatory learning, AI4YOU(th) has contributed to building a generation of young Europeans who are not only AI users, but also conscious agents of change, advocating for technology that reflects the values of democracy, sustainability and human rights. Participants shared a range of reflections on their learning experience, such as: "Soft skills, prompting skills, visualisation of future and also communication and team building." "not only about AI and different cultures, but also about responsibility, team work and time management." "How to be flexible on the job."
