Objectives

In essence, the idea of Urban Seeds of Change: a Community Garden Experience (USC) emerged as a proactive response to the urgent call for action in urban communities across Europe, together with partners who shared the same values. It reflected a collective commitment to building sustainable, inclusive, and resilient urban futures, aligning with the overarching goals of the Erasmus+ program and the European Green Agenda. At the heart of our community in the city of Barreiro, a vibrant communal garden once stood as a symbol of shared green space, community, unity, and empowerment. Its loss, due to city expansion plans, marked more than the disappearance of a few plants and benches; it felt like a withdrawal of the city's power to shape our lives positively. However, we managed to find a new empty plot, perfect for establishing a new urban garden. The loss of our communal garden was a setback, but it ignited a flame of resilience and determination within our community. Through several discussion forums with the locals, the youth of Barreiro, Mula’s community, and project partners, an idea emerged—to create a project that would not only reconnect us with the essence of communal living but also empower the next generation to be stewards of sustainable urban development, fostering a sense of responsibility for shaping the cities they inhabited. Our Erasmus+ Youth Exchange Urban Seeds of Change aimed at reclaiming urban power and fostering resilience in the face of change. By focusing on themes such as Community Organization for Resilience, Arts & Crafts, and Permaculture, the project sought to rejuvenate the spirit of community and creativity that the garden once embodied. Through this initiative, we aimed to turn our loss into a legacy, ensuring that the next generation inherited a city where the community's voice was not only heard but actively shaped the urban landscape. Objectives of Urban Seeds of Change: To empower young people with knowledge and skills in urban gardening, sustainability, and permaculture. To foster a sense of community, resilience, and active citizenship among participants. To provide a space for cultural exchange, creativity, and environmental awareness. To promote sustainable urban development and reconnect youth with nature in an urban context. To encourage young people to take an active role in shaping their cities and advocating for green public spaces. Through these objectives, the project sought to equip participants with the tools needed to drive positive change in their communities, ensuring that the values of sustainability and collective action continued to thrive beyond the project itself.
