The objectives for the project "Leaders in Times of Chaos" aimed at the holistic development of participants in various key areas. In the European Union, as well as in Portugal, media literacy and leadership skills among young people are areas of growing interest. Reports from Eurofound, the EU agency for improving living and working conditions, highlight the importance of promoting opportunities for young people to develop leadership skills and engage actively in decision-making within their communities. Promoting media literacy is essential. We are aware that everyone uses social media and the internet today, which can lead to both positive and negative outcomes. First and foremost, the goal was to develop essential skills, including communication skills, digital literacy, and critical thinking. Empowering young people to analyze and understand information effectively in chaotic environments is crucial to equip them with the necessary tools to face the challenges of the contemporary world. Through structured and practical activities, participants were encouraged to enhance their verbal and non-verbal communication skills, as well as deepen their understanding of digital media and their ability to discern between accurate information and misinformation. Additionally, special emphasis was placed on developing skills to deal with anxiety and emotional management under pressure. Recognizing the importance of being prepared to face challenging situations, especially in times of crisis, the project aimed to provide participants with practical strategies and tools to manage stress and remain calm in adverse circumstances. This will not only empower them to make informed and effective decisions but also contribute to their overall emotional and mental well-being. In terms of attitudes and values, the project aimed to promote openness, respect, and tolerance towards others. Through dialogue and facilitated discussions on social and political issues affecting their communities, participants were encouraged to explore different perspectives and experiences, thereby cultivating a more refined understanding and appreciation of the diversity of ideas and values. This will not only strengthen the community bonds among participants but also contribute to creating an inclusive environment, a "safe space," where everyone can communicate openly. Moreover, the project aimed to improve communication effectiveness by overcoming linguistic and cultural barriers. Through interactive activities, participants were encouraged to develop interpersonal and intercultural communication skills (debates, role plays, and others). This not only promoted a greater understanding and appreciation of individual differences but also contributed to building stronger and more meaningful relationships within the group. A crucial aspect of the project was challenging negative attitudes and beliefs toward individuals from different cultural, social, or ethnic backgrounds. Recognizing the importance of respect for diversity and promoting inclusion, the project sought to foster a culture of acceptance and mutual understanding among participants. This was achieved through structured activities and facilitated discussions aimed at raising awareness about issues of prejudice and stereotype and encouraging participants to recognize and confront their own biases and assumptions. Finally, the project also aimed to raise awareness among participants about the misinformation situation in the EU and the efforts being made by the EU to improve the situation. Recognizing the importance of media literacy and the ability to discern reliable information from misinformation, the project sought to equip participants with the tools and knowledge needed to protect themselves from the spread of false and misleading information. This will not only strengthen their resilience and ability to navigate the digital world but also contribute to the building of a more informed and conscious society.
