Objectives

The “DemoComp – Bridges for Democracy” project was implemented with the purpose of strengthening Democratic Literacy among young people, ensuring that all of them have the skills and opportunities to participate in public life in an informed, critical, and active way. The FNAJ based its action on the needs identified through national youth consultation processes, which highlighted the distance felt by young people regarding decision-making processes and the lack of practical experiences of democratic participation. Thus, the project sought to promote full and accessible citizenship, aligned with the EU Youth Strategy 2019–2027. The initiative aimed to bring young people closer to public policies, strengthen youth associations as spaces for active citizenship, and address challenges such as disinformation and low political participation. To achieve this, it combined actions focused on engagement, capacity-building and connection between young people, associations, schools, municipalities and political decision-makers, promoting both theoretical development and practical application of democratic skills. The highlight of the project was the National Forum “DemoComp – Bridges for Democracy,” held in Covilhã from 15 to 17 November, which brought together young youth leaders, youth workers, political decision-makers and experts. During this event, participants worked in idea labs, discussed current democratic challenges and co-created the DemoComp framework, accompanied by an infographic and a practical guide outlining key democratic citizenship competences. This framework has become an innovative and replicable resource, now available for use by associations, schools, municipalities and other entities that promote youth participation. The main objectives of the project, achieved throughout its implementation, were: - To strengthen young people’s democratic literacy by providing knowledge, tools and real participation experiences; - To develop essential skills for democratic life, such as critical thinking, political information analysis, constructive debate and understanding of electoral processes; - To promote dialogue between young people and public decision-makers, creating spaces for listening, sharing and joint construction; - To involve young people in real democratic processes through debates, digital activities, collective ideation and formal contributions to public policies; - To create and consolidate the DemoComp framework, a practical tool that identifies key citizenship competences, compiles good practices and guides the implementation of democratic processes in various educational and community contexts. In this way, the project contributed to strengthening youth participation and bringing young people closer to civic life, ensuring that they feel informed, empowered and capable of fully exercising their role as European citizens.
