The idea for ‘Muda a Cena’ arose from a need identified in the local community by young volunteers from the Braga Red Cross Youth (JCV Braga), who conceptualised the project and helped to prepare its application. This need stems from a gap in Braga, where many young people feel they do not have access to active participation in their own community. They often lack the knowledge that facilitates this more active involvement, in the form of better access to existing information, available resources and open spaces where they can fully integrate and contribute to promoting the changes they desire and consider necessary. This project aimed precisely to meet these needs, which also fall within the mission of JCV Braga in the context of promoting youth participation and the empowerment and resilience of young people. The name of the project, “Muda a Cena” (Change the Scene), reflects the idea of transformation through the active participation of young people. The project sought to give them a voice and space for action, placing them at the centre of change. Young people were the main “actors” on a “stage” that was intended to be a safe and conducive environment for their civic intervention, in order to build a more just and inclusive society. The main objective of the project was to increase the active and meaningful participation of young people in society through their involvement in non-formal community education activities, in order to promote their awareness of three main themes: Volunteering, Political Life and Favourable Spaces. In order to achieve the main objective of the project, several specific objectives were also outlined, which guided all of Muda a Cena's actions: Provide a comprehensive overview of the various opportunities available to young people, from local to European level, in line with European objectives and priorities. Raise awareness among young people of their skills and competences, encouraging their participation. Empower and enable young volunteers and youth groups and organisations working in this field, facilitating their involvement through networking. Create spaces and activities that are favourable to young people, designed by young people for their peers. That said, it is still possible to identify the ultimate goal of the project: to be a starting point for more youth participation initiatives in the community that enable young people to be relevant actors in society. In addition to the objectives defined within the specific scope of the project, Muda a Cena was directly linked to the 11 Youth Goals and their implementation. Goal #9 Space and Participation for All aims to strengthen democratic participation and the autonomy of young people by providing them with spaces dedicated to youth – a goal shared by Muda a Cena.
