The Dialogues for Equality project was designed to address a structural challenge observed in the local context: the existence of formal opportunities for civic participation, yet low uptake by young people, especially young people with fewer opportunities, and limited translation of their concerns into real decision-making processes. In parallel, we identified a clear need to strengthen democratic and media literacy, create safe spaces for informed debate, and promote a culture of equality, non-discrimination, and shared community responsibility, in line with the EU Youth Strategy 2019–2027 and the objective of strengthening democracy through active participation and social and civic engagement. By implementing this project, we aimed to create a youth participation ecosystem that combined non-formal learning, structured dialogue with stakeholders, and the production of public outputs, ensuring that young people’s voices were not limited to symbolic consultation but evolved into co-creation and tangible influence. For this reason, we designed a progressive pathway integrating community outreach, capacity-building, artistic creation, and civic advocacy mechanisms, with the active involvement of youth organisations, NGOs, and local authorities. General Objective To promote young people’s active participation in democratic life by strengthening competencies for critical and responsible citizenship and reinforcing cooperation between young people, civil society organisations, and local authorities through inclusive, equality-oriented processes. Specific Objectives To increase young people’s knowledge and understanding of political institutions, democratic processes, and participation mechanisms, strengthening their ability to make informed decisions and engage consistently. To develop key competencies for active citizenship, with an emphasis on critical thinking, communication, argumentation, collaboration, leadership, media literacy, and advocacy capacity, through non-formal education methodologies and experiential learning. To create real conditions for inclusion and participation for young people with fewer opportunities by reducing economic, social, and cultural barriers and ensuring safe, accessible, non-discriminatory environments where diverse perspectives can be expressed and valued. To strengthen bridges between young people and decision-makers by promoting spaces for structured dialogue and meaningful participation, grounded in topics prioritised by young people and translated into concrete proposals and recommendations. To co-create and disseminate solutions and resources that are useful for the community through digital and material outputs (e.g., digital storytelling narratives, campaigns, and a manual/guide) that reinforce messages of equality, participation, and collective responsibility, with replication potential. To consolidate a local cooperation network among young people, organisations, and authorities by establishing collaborative working practices and creating foundations for post-project continuity through follow-up actions and integration into local dynamics. We wanted young people to leave the project not only better informed, but also more capable and more confident to act, engage in dialogue, and influence others, turning participation into a regular practice. The project was designed to generate added value at three levels: individual (competencies and agency), community (a more inclusive and aware civic environment), and institutional (improved quality of dialogue and cooperation with local authorities). This approach enabled us to align the intervention with European priorities while also delivering concrete, measurable results at local level.
