The Associação Juventude de Vila Fonche is a private social solidarity organisation that has been working in the field of children and young people for over 40 years. The organisation has a great impact at the local level, being one of the main references in the municipality of Arcos de Valdevez and the district of Viana do Castelo when it comes to working with young people. Over the last few years, it has developed various activities and projects aimed at working with young people from Arcos de Valdevez and Ponte da Barca. In all the activities and projects coordinated by the organisation or through partnerships created with other national and international entities, one of the main focuses is the involvement and personalised work with young people with fewer opportunities. The organisation has been part of the Eurodesk Multipliers Network since 2018. Active participation in this network has made it easier for us to reach more young people and we now have more young people who are better informed about their role in society and Europe, but also about the programmes that the European Union offers them. In October 2023, we carried out several face-to-face activities in schools in the municipalities of Arcos de Valdevez, Ponte da Barca and Ponte de Lima, during the "Time to Move" campaign. The main aim of those activities was to share the opportunities that Europe offers young people, aimed at developing their human, social and cultural capital. Those sessions were mainly aimed at young people aged 15 to 18. DiscoverEu was undoubtedly the initiative that most caught young people's attention and to which they asked the most questions to find out how they could take part. After a detailed explanation, in which the European Youth Portal (the website where young people can apply) was explored, many young people emphasised that the opportunity is really interesting. However, they also said that it would be difficult for them to take part because they couldn't afford all the other costs associated with the activity (accommodation, food, insurance, leisure and learning activities, etc.). Another factor they pointed out that negatively influenced their participation was the difficulty in sensitising their families to go on this "adventure" without the support of an adult they could trust to guide them and ensure their physical and psychological well-being. After listening directly to young people and understanding their real opinion of this opportunity created by the European Commission, we decided internally at the Juventude de Vila Fonche to create the "Europe is on us" project. This project aims to work more closely with young people who have fewer opportunities, providing them with similar experiences and putting them on an equal footing with their peers, regardless of the difficulties and/or obstacles they face. "Europe is on us" will be an initiative that will be characterised not only by providing a travelling experience but above all by being a process that will promote the creation of a strong sense of belonging to Europe. The project will include educational, interactive and inclusive activities that will enrich the young participants and contribute to building a more united Europe. Bearing in mind the needs described above, "Europe is on us" has the following main objectives: - Raising awareness and motivating young people with fewer opportunities to take an active part in local initiatives and programmes provided by the European Commission, such as the Erasmus Programme and the European Solidarity Corps; - Working and promoting the themes of equality, inclusion and fairness among young people who face the most difficulties and obstacles; - Equipping young people with fewer opportunities with a set of knowledge and skills that will add value to their personal and professional future, such as self-knowledge, self-confidence, communication and critical thinking skills, self-reflection, creativity, flexibility, group work, empathy, planning and management, etc; - Empowering and connecting young people with fewer opportunities to Europe, exploring European values and fostering a sense of belonging to the European Union; - Raising awareness of environmental protection and sustainability among young people with fewer opportunities, encouraging the adoption of sustainable travel practices and greener behaviour; - Encouraging non-formal and informal learning through practical experiences and discoveries, providing opportunities for personal and social growth; - Training young people for the digital age, promoting the use of digital tools that encourage learning and active participation in society; - Create moments of dissemination and visibility where young participants with fewer opportunities share their own experiences and learning with their peers.
