The idea of the #re-ACT-ivE+ project started from the common concern of the partner organizations regarding the low level of participation of young people in democratic life, especially in the elections for the European Parliament. We noticed that many young people, especially those with fewer opportunities, showed a lack of trust in the European institutions and were vulnerable to disinformation. The 2024 European elections represented a perfect opportunity to motivate young people to actively engage in civic life. Also, 2024 was a year full of elections in Romania, and the project activities managed to give a different perspective to the participants, especially those from our national group. Building on successful experiences in using non-formal education methods, we designed the #re-ACT-ivE+ project to strengthen civic competences, critical thinking and active participation, in full accordance with the priorities of the Erasmus+ Youth programme. The main aim of the #re-ACT-ivE+ project was to strengthen civic engagement, democratic participation and critical thinking among young people in different European countries, especially ahead of the 2024 European Parliament elections. We aimed to support 38 young participants, 21 of whom came from backgrounds with fewer opportunities, to become more active citizens both in their communities and at European level. The choice of partners from Turkey, Croatia, Lithuania, Greece, Bulgaria and Poland was made based on the needs identified in the Writing Phase in each of these countries and the partners’ motivation to engage in the Writing, Preparation, Implementation and DEOR Phases. The specific objectives of the project were: O1: To improve the knowledge of the 38 participants from 7 countries about the role, functions and activities of the European Parliament during 9 months of implementation O2: To raise awareness of the importance of voting and active social involvement among the participants through 8 days of non-formal education activities and through continuous learning during the 9 months of the project. O3: To develop the critical thinking skills of the 38 participants, helping them to better analyze information, combat fake news and participate consciously in democratic processes during 9 months of activities. O4: To promote social inclusion by providing opportunities for meaningful involvement for 21 participants facing economic, social or cultural obstacles during the 9 months of implementation. These objectives were achieved by implementing specific non-formal education activities, such as the European Parliament simulation, thematic workshops on human rights and tolerance, the production of dissemination materials (brochures, videos) and the organization of reflection and dialogue sessions with local authorities. Through practical activities such as simulation games, workshops, cultural exchanges, the use of digital tools and meetings with decision-makers, the project aimed to create a lasting impact on the civic competences of the participants, encouraging them to become active agents of positive change in their communities and beyond.
