Objectives

The project was designed in direct response to a European-wide challenge: the growing political disengagement of young people. This concern was initially identified through a general needs analysis conducted by ASALT in 2023, and corroborated by key data from Eurostat, the European Youth Forum, and the European Parliament. These statistics revealed alarming trends—only 14% of young people feel heard at the EU level, just 28% believe politicians consider their views, and less than 40% feel equipped to participate in civic or political life. Recognizing these systemic issues, ASALT engaged five trusted partner organizations—Senza Confini (Italy), Varbovo (Bulgaria), Fundacja (Poland), Future Generations (Greece), and Hatay (Türkiye)—to investigate similar patterns in their local contexts. Each partner conducted a SWOT analysis, and the findings were synthesized using problem/solution trees and a Venn diagram to identify common needs across youth, communities, and organizations. A joint 20-item questionnaire administered to 312 respondents (120 youth, 30 community members, and 6 NGO teams) produced over 3,000 data points that shaped the core of the project. Key Needs Identified: Youth: Lack of basic civic knowledge (notably in Vidin and Hatay), low motivation to engage (especially in La Spezia), a widespread sense of political alienation, and substantial barriers to democratic participation—particularly among young people with fewer opportunities. Local Communities: Low levels of youth-led civic initiatives, poor representation of youth in local/EU decision-making, and limited engagement in Erasmus+ projects focused on civic themes. Partner Organizations: Weak visibility at the local level, minimal outreach to marginalized youth, and a strong need for improved European cooperation and co-developed civic education tools. Project Objectives: In response to these interconnected challenges, the project aimed to achieve the following three Specific Objectives (SOs): SO1 – Strengthen the civic knowledge, skills for engagement, and democratic participation of 38 young people from six countries through a 7-day international mobility in Vatra Dornei, Romania. Activities were experiential and learner-centered, including: Democratic Quest, Civic Knowledge Scenario Cards, Civic Charades (Days 1–2) Gallery Walk on Political Ideologies, Institutional Debate, and Municipal Visit (Days 3–4) Community Meeting Simulation, Project Planning, and Project Pitch (Days 6–7) SO2 – Empower 12 participants with fewer opportunities (social, economic, or geographic barriers) via inclusive practices such as: Tailored pre-departure support Linguistic and intercultural preparation Dedicated reflection sessions Full integration and logistical/financial assistance throughout the project SO3 – Enhance the organizational capacity and transnational cooperation of the six youth NGOs, by: Co-developing educational tools and mobility content Using shared digital collaboration platforms (Google Drive, regular virtual meetings) Implementing joint dissemination strategies and Youthpass debriefing sessions These objectives were designed to ensure direct impact at both participant and structural levels. By targeting youth engagement, community involvement, and NGO capacity simultaneously, the project fostered meaningful change rooted in documented needs and evidence-based strategies. The comprehensive design ensured sustainability, inclusiveness, and a clear European dimension, while also aligning with the broader goals of Erasmus+ and the European Youth Strategy. The project exceeded its goals, with all 38 participants not only designing but also implementing local follow-up projects that reached over 200 peers. Youth developed multiple Key Competences, including multilingual, citizenship, personal/social, and entrepreneurial skills. Participants with fewer opportunities showed strong personal growth, taking leadership roles and improving public speaking and teamwork—demonstrating increased cultural awareness and learning-to-learn skills. Digital outreach surpassed expectations with over 6,000 views and 250+ interactions, boosting digital competence. Partner NGOs adopted successful tools (like “Civic Knowledge Scenario Cards” and “Youthpass Families”) into future Erasmus+ KA1 and KA2 projects for 2025–26, ensuring sustainability and long-term impact.
