The “Debatable Me 2” project was created as a result of the idea that came from the group of participants in “Debatable Me”, the first part of this project, implemented in 2023. During the first “Debatable Me” project, participants expressed their desire to learn more about democracy and politics in a similar context, while of course practicing their debating skills. So, after having discussions with the participating groups, we decided to implement another project of this type, naming it “Debatable Me 2”, to emphasize that it is the result of the desire of the young people in the first project. The main objective of creating “DM2” was thus to debate the democratic participation of young people, in order to increase their involvement in the next political events in their communities. Thus, this time, the priorities of “DM2” were to increase active involvement as citizens, to accumulate intercultural competences, to exchange ideas in the political and other areas, to develop critical thinking and soft skills. Some participants from the first part of ‘DM’, helped to conduct surveys in their communities, discussing in their peer groups the habits of getting involved in political activities in their communities, as well as the debating skills they feel they have, and finding out whether or not such a project would be beneficial for other young people in their communities. The responses were ultimately positive, finding a high need among young people to build up both debating and political skills, especially in the immediate future. In addition to the wish expressed by the young participants in the first part of the project, we also focused our work on existing statistics in this sector: only 16% of young people in Europe participate in public consultations in the political area, 46% of them exercise their right to vote, while other political or civic actions (participation in protests, expressing political opinions in social media, signing petitions, volunteering, etc.) show percentages between 40-20% (https://data.europa.eu/en/publications/datastories/understanding-youth-engagement-europe-through-open-data). An additional reason for running the “Debatabale Me 2” project was the upcoming elections in each participating country, thus helping young participants to make informed decisions and encouraging them to actively participate in these major political events: Romania and Lithuania having elections at the end of 2024 (RO elections - round 1 - overlapped with the mobility period, thus even setting an example of good practice through participation at group level), Greece in 2025, Hungary in 2026 and Spain in 2027. Our project goal was to empower conscious electoral participation of 40 youth from RO, HU, ES, EL and LT through intercultural debate until the end of the project. The specific objectives were: O1. To create an engaging environment where 40 youth aged 18-23 from RO, HU, ES, EL and LT debate social issues in order to raise their democratic participation and knowledge by the end of the project. O2. To raise thoughtful voting capacities in 40 youth aged 18-23 from RO, HU, ES, EL and LT until the end of the project. O3. To strengthen the capacities of participating NGOs from RO, HU, ES, EL and LT to mentor the youth by the end of the project, amplifying their impact on future electoral engagements. The objectives mentioned above, as well as the main goal of the project, have been successfully achieved with the help of all the people involved in its achievement, as will be exemplified further in this report.
