The main objective of the project was to strengthen young people’s critical thinking, argumentation skills, and democratic participation through debate-based non-formal learning. The project aimed to provide students with practical opportunities to learn how to analyse complex topics, formulate well-structured arguments, and engage in respectful dialogue with others holding different viewpoints. Another key objective was to promote intercultural understanding among young people from Romania, Serbia, and Slovenia. Through joint activities and exchanges, the project sought to create a safe environment where participants could discuss social issues, share perspectives, and develop mutual respect. The project also aimed to support educators and youth workers by developing a practical handbook on organising debate sessions in intercultural settings. This resource was intended to help schools and youth organisations integrate debate methodology into their educational activities. Finally, the project aimed to strengthen cooperation between the partner organisations and build their capacity to implement international youth initiatives that promote active citizenship and democratic values.
The project was developed in response to a growing need among young people for stronger critical thinking skills, respectful dialogue, and active civic participation. In the partner countries – Romania, Serbia, and Slovenia – educators and youth workers increasingly observe that young people are often exposed to polarised public debates and misinformation, while lacking structured opportunities to practice argumentation, listening, and constructive discussion. Our organisations identified a clear need to strengthen debate culture as a tool for democratic participation and intercultural understanding. Many students are interested in discussing complex social issues, but they rarely receive practical training in how to formulate arguments, evaluate information, or engage respectfully with different viewpoints. The project therefore aimed to provide young people with accessible opportunities to develop debate skills through structured sessions, intercultural exchanges, and practical learning tools. By bringing together youth organisations from three countries, we also aimed to encourage cross-border dialogue and mutual learning. Through this initiative, we sought to support young people in becoming more active members of society.
