Objectives

The "Digital Detox – Balancing Screen and Green" youth exchange aimed to address the increasing dependence on digital devices among young people and promote a healthier balance between online and offline life. The project sought to empower participants with the knowledge, skills, and motivation to critically assess their screen time habits, reduce excessive digital consumption, and engage more actively with nature and their surroundings. By bringing together young people from Ireland, Serbia, Romania, and Turkey, the project fostered cross-cultural learning and exchange on the topic of digital well-being, encouraging participants to reflect on their own experiences and learn from each other’s perspectives. One of the main objectives of the project was to raise awareness about the potential negative effects of excessive screen time, including its impact on mental and physical health, social interactions, and overall well-being. Through workshops, discussions, and experiential learning activities, participants explored how prolonged use of digital devices can contribute to stress, anxiety, reduced attention span, and social isolation. By understanding these effects, they were better equipped to make informed choices about their digital habits and find strategies for more responsible and mindful technology use. Another key objective was to encourage young people to reconnect with nature and experience the benefits of outdoor activities. Many young people today spend a significant portion of their time indoors, engaged with screens, which can lead to a disconnection from the natural environment. This project aimed to counteract this trend by introducing participants to nature-based activities that not only provided an alternative to screen time but also contributed to their physical and mental well-being. Hiking, group challenges, and mindfulness exercises in natural settings were designed to help participants appreciate the importance of spending time outdoors and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The project also aimed to equip participants with practical tools and strategies for reducing screen time and using digital devices more responsibly. By engaging in structured discussions, self-reflection exercises, and group challenges, they identified practical steps they could take to minimize unnecessary screen use and develop healthier digital habits. Participants learned techniques such as setting screen time limits, prioritizing offline activities, and using technology in a more intentional way to enhance productivity and well-being rather than as a source of distraction. Additionally, the project sought to foster digital literacy and critical thinking about media consumption. In today’s digital world, young people are constantly exposed to vast amounts of online information, much of which can be misleading or manipulative. The project encouraged participants to reflect on the quality of their digital content consumption, question the credibility of online sources, and develop a more conscious approach to social media and digital engagement. Another important objective was to enhance participants' social skills and encourage meaningful face-to-face interactions. Many young people struggle with building strong social connections due to their reliance on digital communication. By creating a space where participants could interact without the constant presence of digital devices, the project helped them develop stronger interpersonal skills, engage in deep conversations, and build meaningful relationships with their peers. The project also emphasized the importance of maintaining a sustainable balance between technology use and real-life experiences. While digital tools offer many advantages, excessive reliance on them can prevent young people from fully engaging in their education, hobbies, and social lives. By discussing strategies to integrate technology in a way that supports personal growth rather than hinders it, participants gained valuable insights into how they can use digital tools more effectively while avoiding overuse. Finally, the project encouraged participants to take what they had learned and apply it in their own communities. By sharing their experiences and new knowledge with friends, family, and peers, they became advocates for digital well-being and responsible technology use. The project aimed to create a ripple effect, inspiring more young people to reconsider their digital habits and embrace a more balanced, mindful approach to technology use in their daily lives.
