Objectives

Today's digital age, dominated by media, news, and pop culture, significantly influences our perceptions and beliefs. It's essential to empower young Europeans to not only question the information they encounter online but also to adopt a mindset that favors solutions and hope over divisive discourse. Despite the vast majority of European youth being active online, only a small percentage demonstrates the digital competence necessary for critical evaluation of online information. The "Culture Under the Lens" project seeks to highlight and address the challenges young people face in navigating media, pop culture, and disinformation. By equipping them with the necessary tools to overcome these challenges, and ensuring effective impact, this project has a set of clear objectives: - to equip young individuals with the skills to critically analyze media representations and pop culture; - to foster cultural awareness and a nuanced understanding of the world; - to conduct intercultural dialogue; - to promote creativity and multimedia skills; - to promote critical thinking; - to enhance media literacy; - to improve digital competencies; - to promote active citizenship; - to empower participants to take proactive stances on local and international challenges; - to provide participants with a new set of non-formal education methodologies; - to enhance creative problem-solving skills; - to build a supportive network among diverse participants. Through two key youth exchanges, "Culture Under the Lens" is designed to inspire critical thinking and action-taking. During the first exchange, the focus will be on cultivating a new mindset among participants, enabling them to critically engage with online information and media content. They will create short videos reinterpreting news segments or pop culture moments, embodying cultural sensitivity and context-specific insights. This phase encourages participants to criticize trends, find which problems echo with them, understand how can be made by their own hands, and brainstorm innovative solutions by designing advocacy campaigns to promote awareness and understanding of the issues at hand. Between exchanges, an online mentoring program will facilitate the continued development and implementation of these advocacy campaigns. This program aims to ensure knowledge transfer, offer support, guide reflection, and foster community building among participants, enhancing the project's impact and reach. In the second youth exchange, participants will reflect on the steps they have begun to take, discuss the outcomes achieved so far, and look further into the strengths, and weaknesses of their campaigns. This stage allows for the compilation of these efforts into a project booklet, documenting the proactive steps and initiatives that have emerged, serving as an effective record of their achievements, and as a tool for inspiring further action. Ultimately, targeting young individuals across Europe, this initiative promotes tools for a generation prepared to fight against hate speech and misinformation, and fostering a culture of trust, shared values, and cooperative action. It offers a platform for young people to meet their needs for support, and empowerment, and actively contribute to building a more inclusive and informed society.
