Teenagers today are facing many challenges and pressures, which affect their general health and well-being. Besides all the naturally occurring physical changes that a transition into young adulthood brings, teenagers are subject to different types of additional societal pressures (society, parents, school etc) and influences of social media (comparison with others, online bullying, negative comments and the never-ending desire to define one’s worth by the number of “likes” and “followers”). Working with young people this became obvious and when talking about it with them they expressed a clear dissatisfaction with their lives in general and a strong need for community, teen support and physical contact. They expressed the need for a better quality of life, but when asked about what they meant by it, they had a difficult time describing what that means and how to achieve it. The latter has also become evident in the responses of teenagers in all the partnering countries, who participated in the research we conducted, enabling us to realise that teenagers across different countries of Europe are expressing the same issues and needs - high levels of stress due to school work and fear of failure, overload of obligations, lack of time for relaxation, hobbies and things that bring them joy. Consequently, the digital world is their place to go to “hang out” with their friends, thus lacking the opportunities for creating genuine, deeper personal connections with people and creating supportive networks where they would be heard and understood. High levels of stress, loneliness and a feeling of not having somebody to talk to leads them to experience anxiety - a feeling they are familiar with, recognize it as unpleasant, but not as something that needs addressing or something they would turn for help with for different reasons. One of them being the social stigma connected with asking for help with mental problems and the other being lack the information about where to turn to for help. ZenSpace project was about opening spaces and opportunities which would address the above stated needs of young people. The objectives were as follows: - to strengthen awareness among young people about the importance of taking care of one’s own well-being and developing different aspects of it (mental, emotional, social, physical and developmental). - to strengthen awareness among young people about the importance of physical activity and healthy eating habits that improve physical health. - to equip young people with practical skills and knowledge necessary to improve and maintain well-being. - to equip young people with knowledge and practical skills necessary to recognize, understand and manage their own emotions and develop empathy towards other people’s feelings/emotions. - to increase awareness among young people about the importance of mental health care and reduce the stigma connected to mental health, seeking help and dealing with mental health problems. - to equip young people with practical techniques and strategies for dealing with stress, pressure and developing resilience. - to provide young people a safe and supportive environment in which they can learn from each other by sharing their experiences and recognize their own, inner potential for improving their well-being. - to strengthen young people’s skills for establishing quality, positive interpersonal relationships based on respectful communication, empathy, intercultural dialogue, acceptance and cooperation. - to strengthen the capacities of partner organisations and their staff with knowledge and skills in the field of well-being of youth. - to build quality cooperation and solid partnership between participating organisations and a strong foundation for future cooperation.
