Objectives

The main theme of the project “I have autism, so what” was the exchange of experiences of young people with autism (exchange of useful and effective strategies of young people with autism for a better quality of life) and empowerment to face the challenges of life changes. The participants strengthened their communication and interaction skills with new people in a new, unfamiliar environment, improved their knowledge of English and learned the basics of Slovenian, Latvian and Swedish. They gained an experience that strengthened their confidence for independent travel abroad. By getting to know peers from another country, their culture and way of life, they became more open and tolerant of other cultures, and their sense of European citizenship was also strengthened. The aim of the project was to provide young people with autism with more opportunities to socialize, and above all, to gain new social contacts, communication and interaction with peers, both in another environment and with peers from other countries who bring their own experiences and lifestyles with them. Learning social and communication skills is a lifelong learning process. It is valuable if the learning environments are varied, as this way young people with autism learn to use the strategies they otherwise use in their everyday lives, which are often unchanged. This youth exchange was an upgrade of the first youth exchange that we implemented in 2023 with one partner organization, as we collaborated with two partner organizations (from Latvia and Sweden). In this way, we made this experience possible for other young people with autism, who otherwise would not have the opportunity to gain it in other projects. The organizations involved upgraded their experience by planning and implementing an international youth exchange and empowered themselves to implement such and similar projects in the future.
