“Mountain to Move” was a response to a very real and everyday challenge faced by youth workers across Europe: inactive lifestyles, increasing mental health problems and a growing disconnection from nature. With this project, we wanted to reconnect youth workers with nature, not just as a place for leisure, but as a dynamic and powerful learning environment, and to introduce and teach them how they can use nature to influence and engage the young people they work with. The primary goal was to equip youth workers with tools, methods and experiences that promote healthy lifestyles through hiking, outdoor activities and sustainability-based practices. We wanted participants to experience the transformative potential of nature-based education, physically, mentally and socially, and to empower them to pass this on to the young people they work with. In the first part of the project, we created a space in the natural environment of Manglisi, Georgia, to encourage youth workers to reflect on their own habits and values, while also stepping out of their comfort zone through challenging physical activities. In this way, we promoted not only the development of skills, but also deep connections with peers, personal resilience and environmental responsibility. The project objectives were: • Raise awareness of the health benefits of outdoor activities, especially hiking, and encourage participants to adopt a more active lifestyle. • Promote healthy habits, including physical activity, balanced nutrition and mental well-being. • Build respect for sustainability and environmental sustainability by using nature as a learning environment and subject. • Empower youth workers with non-formal educational tools in the outdoors to support the physical and emotional health of young people. • Encourage creativity, self-reflection and teamwork through challenges in unfamiliar natural environments. • To promote intercultural dialogue and cooperation and strengthen networks between youth workers from different countries. • To involve and support youth workers with fewer opportunities and to create inclusive and supportive group dynamics. With these goals, the “Mountain to Move 1” initiative sought to not only impact individual participants, but also their organizations and communities with sustainable practices that support a healthier and more connected generation of young people. In the second part of the project in Slovenia (Bohinj and Kobarid), we upgraded the content from the first part and gave participants an emphasis on the topics of: active listening, how to use activities in nature and hiking as a diagnostic and therapeutic tool, by sharing and assuming roles and playing different situations we strengthened our knowledge of responding to unforeseen situations, by using "case studies" we strengthened our knowledge and responses to difficult stories and background analysis and action, connecting and leadership methods of work aimed at connecting groups and individuals within them, we learned how to use different methods of work, such as music therapy, to help young people and last but not least we showed methods of work and activities in nature to improve the mental well-being of young people as well as youth workers. We learned how to communicate with young people and what educational methods we can use (punishment, reward, expectations). We learned how to give feedback, evaluate and plan action plans to improve the lives of young people.
