We designed our Eco Heroes project in order to create a space where young people could address one of the most defining issues of their age, the environmental and climate problem, in their own voices and from a democratic perspective. The starting point of our project was the conviction that environmental protection is not merely a technical matter but one deeply intertwined with democratic values such as shared life, responsibility and participation. With this conviction, we aimed to instil an ecologically conscious way of life in our young people not as an abstract goal but as a concrete attitude that could find a place in their daily lives. As we shaped our project, we wanted to emphasise that protecting the environment and democratic participation are in fact two sides of the same coin, because both rest on the individual taking responsibility, caring for the common good and taking an active part in decision making. As we planned our project, we considered that awareness about the environment is not sufficient on its own and that this awareness must turn into action and behavioural change. For this reason we conceived Eco Heroes as a gathering where young people from different countries come together to share the environmental problems, solutions and good practices of their own countries, learn from one another and develop a shared sense of responsibility. We wanted our young people not only to gain a critical view of their own societies during this process but also to develop a European identity and a feeling of solidarity. In this way we aimed for our project to be not just an information sharing event but an experience that transforms the attitudes and behaviour of young people. Beneath this overall vision we set concrete and measurable objectives. Our first objective was to deepen our participants' knowledge and awareness of ecological issues and sustainable living. Our second objective was to develop methods and strategies that would make environmental education a natural part of youth work. Our third objective was to build lasting partnerships and joint work between countries around sustainability. Our fourth objective was to strengthen our participants' skills and attitudes in democratic practice, social engagement and ecological activism. We designed each of these objectives in direct connection with the concrete sessions and workshops of our activity. We deliberately aligned our project with the priorities of the Erasmus+ programme. Eco Heroes was designed to be in line directly with the priority of the environment and the fight against climate change. In addition we supported the priority of inclusion and diversity through a design in which young people from different backgrounds could take part on equal terms. We strengthened the priority of digital transformation through the effective use of digital tools and social media in our preparation and visibility work. We nourished the priority of participation in democratic life and common values through the basic design of our project that rests on democratic values and through the involvement of young people in decision making. We defined our target group as young people interested in environmental matters and eager to create change in their own communities. As the coordinating institution, our position as Kastamonu Göl Anadolu Lisesi, with both a strong educational infrastructure and a highly motivated student profile inclined towards international projects, made it meaningful for us to host this project. By carrying out our activity in Kastamonu, a city distinguished by its nature, we aimed both to offer our participants a learning environment in close contact with nature and to bring our local community together with an international experience. In line with all these objectives, the outcomes we expected to achieve by the end of our project are clear. We aimed for a marked increase in our participants' understanding of ecological issues, the development of strategies for integrating environmental education into youth work, the establishment of sustainability oriented intercultural partnerships, and the strengthening of our young people's skills in democratic participation and ecological activism. In setting these goals, we wanted the impact of our project to continue through our participants and our organisations even after the activity had ended.
