Objectives

The most fundamental aim of our project was to increase environmental awareness among young people and to foster interest in sustainable lifestyles. Research conducted before our project showed that while 60% of young people in Turkey were aware of the effects of global warming, only 40% thought it would directly affect them. Similarly, while 65% believed in the importance of the green transition, only 50% stated they knew how it could be achieved. The core problem identified was that although young people want to contribute to environmental issues, they do not know what to do or how to act. We believed this situation prevented them from making environmental contributions at social and national levels. Therefore, especially since it is scientifically proven that "experiential learning" has a powerful impact on young people, we aimed to contribute to solving the aforementioned problems by having our youth observe European Green Capitals on-site in this project. We specifically aimed to increase environmental awareness by enabling young people with fewer opportunities—those facing economic, geographical, cultural, or social barriers who have never been abroad or had the chance to observe European countries—to travel sustainably with DiscoverEU. Along with this, we also included strengthening solidarity among young people and reinforcing the meaning of European Union citizenship among our goals. In summary, our primary and main objective was to enable participants to observe the elements, policies, decisions, and good practice examples that make cities European Green Capitals on-site, and to inspire them to implement similar practices in their own communities.
