The main objective of FarmFuture+ was to support the transition from conventional, chemical-intensive farming to sustainable agroforestry practices in Germany, Serbia and North Macedonia. We aimed to increase knowledge, practical skills and confidence of adult learners and small-scale farmers to implement regenerative agricultural methods. Specifically, we sought to: • Raise awareness about soil regeneration, biodiversity protection and reduction of chemical dependency; • Provide hands-on training in dynamic agroforestry systems, grafting, pruning, soil management and water conservation; • Establish agroforestry trial plots in North Macedonia as living demonstration sites; • Develop accessible digital learning materials to reach farmers unable to attend in person; • Strengthen transnational cooperation and institutional capacity among partner organisations. Through these objectives, the project aimed to combine awareness, practical empowerment, field demonstration and digital dissemination in order to promote environmentally sustainable and economically viable agricultural models.
The FarmFuture+ “Innovative Operational Plans for Sustainable Agriculture” project was developed in response to the urgent need to align agricultural efficiency with environmental sustainability in Germany, Serbia and North Macedonia. Conventional, chemical-intensive farming in our regions has led to soil degradation, biodiversity loss and increasing dependency on synthetic pesticides, threatening long-term food security and rural livelihoods. We identified a clear gap in practical adult education. While agroforestry is widely discussed at policy level, many small-scale farmers lack the hands-on skills required to design and manage dynamic agroforestry systems. Existing training is often theoretical and does not sufficiently address upskilling needs in soil regeneration, water management, orchard planning and sustainable diversification. Rural communities in Serbia and North Macedonia face economic stagnation and migration. Sustainable agriculture can be both environmentally responsible and economically viable. Through transnational cooperation, practical field training and digital tools, FarmFuture+ addressed environmental, educational and socio-economic needs while promoting accessible learning opportunities for adult farmers.
