Objectives

Through the implementation of this project, we sought to tackle the 'literacy crisis' identified by the PISA 2022 findings via a strategic partnership across Europe. Our main goal was to convert conventional classrooms into environments rich in literacy that actively encourage the development of reading, writing, and speaking abilities. Understanding that every educator plays a role in literacy instruction, we aimed to close the gap in specialized teaching by providing our teams from Germany, Turkey, and Italy with innovative, cross-national approaches. In addition, we intended to cultivate a mindset of lifelong learning among students, assisting them in overcoming reading difficulties and enhancing their creativity as European citizens. By incorporating the suggestions from ELINET and the EU High Level Expert Group, we focused not only on academic success but also on raising community awareness regarding the importance of literacy in fostering social advancement. Ultimately, our aim was to establish a sustainable collaboration among the three schools to offer inclusive, high-quality literacy education that equips the next generation for the challenges of a complex society.

Background

Our application was motivated by the urgent need to address declining literacy rates in Europe, as highlighted by the PISA 2022 findings showing that 1 in 5 students lacks adequate reading proficiency. Our partnership includes schools from Germany, Turkey, and Italy, and aims to tackle the gaps identified in our needs assessment through three primary objectives: 1. **Transform Learning Environments**: We seek to create more engaging literacy spaces by exchanging cross-border methodologies among partner institutions. 2. **Empower Educators**: Recognizing that all educators are literacy instructors, we want to enhance teachers' professional capacities to develop and implement specialized literacy programs through European cooperation. 3. **Address Regional Disparities**: Given the varied literacy challenges in our countries—10% difficulty in Italy compared to over 40% in Turkey—we aim to leverage each school's strengths to find localized solutions. By aligning with the EU High Level Expert Group on Literacy and ELINET, we aspire not only to improve classroom performance but also to promote lifelong learning and ensure future generations possess essential skills for navigating society.
