Objectives

Young marginalized people should have the opportunity to experience Europe and independently get to know European cultures. Adolescents and young adults should be given the chance to go abroad even without financial means. A participatory concept promotes democratic understanding and empowers the participants by encouraging them to overcome their own limits, especially during their first experiences abroad. These experiences support both personal and professional development. The aim was to broaden the young people's cultural skills and enable them to experience self-efficacy. Particularly disadvantaged young people often lack such opportunities. In 2022, the International Youth Work conducted an online survey on the international mobility opportunities for young people in Braunschweig with the aim of further developing international youth work offerings according to the needs of the youth. A total of 726 young people participated. The most common obstacles are high costs, lack of knowledge about affordable options, as well as uncertainties and fears. The social situation of many young people from Braunschweig youth centers and youth social work is challenging; they often have little education and only limited democratic skills. As a result, there are hardly any opportunities for international mobility. This is the reason why we want to expand our offer for this target group and empower those young adults.
