The “Visual Storytelling Journeys” project was designed to provide young people with fewer opportunities from Berlin and surrounding areas with a transformative travel and learning experience across Europe, using the DiscoverEU framework. Our primary objectives were fourfold: first, to enable equal access to European mobility for young people facing economic, social, and cultural barriers that would otherwise prevent them from travelling; second, to foster intercultural understanding, empathy, and a sense of European belonging through direct engagement with diverse communities; third, to develop practical creative skills in photography, storytelling, interviewing, and visual documentation; and fourth, to build participants’ self-confidence, independence, and social competences by navigating unfamiliar environments and collaborating within a diverse group. As an intercultural theatre association rooted in participatory youth work, Alrahallah Theater – Berlin e.V. sought to extend its methodology beyond the stage: using visual storytelling as a vehicle for non-formal learning, cultural exchange, and personal empowerment. The project was specifically targeted at 18-year-old young people from marginalised backgrounds – including those facing economic hardship, experiences of discrimination, cultural differences, and health-related challenges – who would not have been able to participate in DiscoverEU without dedicated organisational support.
