Objectives

With the “L'Europe & nous” project, we want young people who are most affected by inequality to be able to carry out a project that enables them to discover Europe and themselves, by traveling by train. The aim is for 18-year-olds attending 2nd Chance schools run by CEMEA Occitanie to acquire key skills, appreciate the richness of cultural diversity and build their civic identity. This project is a cross-cutting response to our existing activities, and complements the following objectives: to mobilize young people to encourage active and participative European citizenship, and to create and promote opportunities that reinforce inclusion and diversity. By offering a short trip in a group to young people of the same age, who would not have had access to this scheme without this project, by accompanying the young people to prepare the trip, by ensuring their physical and psychological well-being during the trip, and by formalizing the experience on their return, we equip young people with knowledge about Europe and about themselves, and with key skills that will be fundamental in the rest of their lives. Five activities are planned over the 24 months of the project, each with a specific theme related to history, cultural heritage and European citizenship. The details of the itinerary, activities and logistical organization are worked out by the group, with the support of a trainer. Activities can take the form of culinary discoveries, environmental explorations, heritage visits or cultural outings. Two trainers are present for each trip. After an initial phase of disseminating the project to 18-year-olds at 2nd Chance schools and mobilizing young people to formalize a group, each trip project gives rise to 6 months of activities. A weekly time slot is dedicated to the project in advance, to help the group prepare for the project through activities such as discovering the program and activities, organizing group life and learning about negotiation and democracy, administrative and logistical preparation, and intercultural and linguistic preparation. The young people are helped to take as active a part as possible in the project, but the organization retains responsibility for decisions likely to have an impact on the content, quality and suitability for the objectives defined. Visibility and dissemination activities play an important role in the proposals made to participants in the various phases of the project, during preparation, during the trip and after return. These activities are designed to develop skills in a cross-disciplinary and fun way, and leave plenty of room for initiative and creativity. They aim to make the project and its activities visible, and to share project results. They are intended for the participants' social environment, to strengthen social ties; for young people, especially those most affected by inequalities; for youth professionals and local players, to develop educational practices in the fields of formal and non-formal education; and for the general public and decision-makers, to change attitudes and the place of young people in public life.
