The project objectives were as follow: 1) Give young people an opportunity to travel. 2) Young people will be exposed to and experience new cultures 3) Meet new people and connect with EU peers 4) Support young people to get out of their comfort zone and think independently. The participants involved in this project worked together as a team with the support of youth work staff to interrail and travel to a variety of countries across Europe, they were exposed to a variety of new cultures, languages, cuisines, lifestyles and experiencing the rich history of Europe. Participants travelled through a range of European countries including The Netherlands, Germany and Poland all of which were impacted countries of World War 2, during their travels they took opportunity to develop interest in cultural and heritage sites including museums associated with WW2 and develop out their understanding and knowledge of such events which have shaped European culture in effected cities. Young people also took the opportunity to engage with EU peers along the way from a variety of countries and took the chance to learn about their cultures and heritage. Participants of this project have also taken away their own self learning, development and reflection from their interrailing experiences, this is evident in their self-confidence and ability to speak about their experiences, the groups developed out improved cultural competence, independence, self-awareness and ability to manage peer relationships – when conflicts arose during travel and their ability to reflect and resolve afterwards. The young people chosen to participate in this year’s project have been engaging with the service for many years and are from the local community. They come from an area that is faced with many barriers and racist beliefs that hinder their opportunities to travel and experience new cultures. Anti-social behaviours and criminality are normalised in their communities with the young people having to witness it on a daily bases. This project provided the perfect opening for these groups to go and explore different cultures, experiences and themselves while also engaging with other young people on the same journey. The groups have become comfortable in their own bubble but by participating in the project encouraged them become more independent in decision making and problem solving. The project also aligns with our service values and practices helping with improving the young person’s personal and social development for example their independent decision making and problem solving skills. The project was designed to provide an equal opportunity for the young people who would find it very difficult to get experience this chance to learn about new cultures, develop life skills and to feel like a European member. The young people got to encounter new cultures, places and demonstrate independence. This project allowed the young people challenge the stereotypes and prejudice opinions they would hear in their daily lives and get to make their views by coming into contact first hand with the cultures.
