Objectives

With the project “Flavour of Europe”, we wanted to enable groups of young people with fewer opportunities to discover the cultures of other European countries through food and gastronomic culture. We chose this topic because we believe that food is a different, concrete and original way of learning, able to create an interactive environment in which to explore issues such as intercultural dialogue, the promotion of peace, the fight against discrimination, social inclusion and environmental sustainability. The main objective of the project was to make the DiscoverEU experience accessible to young people who, due to geographical, economic or social reasons, would have faced greater difficulties in travelling independently across Europe. The project aimed to offer them not only the opportunity to visit new countries and cities, but also an experience of personal growth, autonomy, group life and active participation. The common thread of the journeys was food: through the discovery of typical products, recipes, food habits and local traditions, participants were able to approach European cultures in a simple, direct and engaging way. The objective was to show that gastronomy is not only a set of dishes or products, but also a key to understanding the history, social relations, cultural differences and values of the communities visited. In this way, the project aimed to break down cultural stereotypes and promote respect, curiosity and openness towards diversity. The project also aimed to address some crucial dimensions for the future of Europe: environmental sustainability, digital transformation, social inclusion and youth participation. For this reason, sustainable behaviours were promoted, in particular through the use of collective and lower-impact means of transport whenever possible, attention to reducing waste and careful management of the materials used during the activities. The use of digital tools was also encouraged in order to facilitate travel, document the experience, prepare content and share the learning journey. A further objective was to allow participants to acquire competences that would remain useful after the end of the journeys: greater personal autonomy, the ability to find their way in new contexts, practical use of English, group cooperation, time management, the ability to tell the story of a European experience and awareness of their own learning outcomes. Through internal follow-up moments within the association, the young people were also able to share what they had learned with their peers, strengthening the link between European mobility and the local community.
