Objectives

By implementing the project "Explore Europe with DiscoverEU inclusion", the Latvian Autism Association (LAA) aimed to achieve the following core objectives: - Ensuring Equal Opportunities: The primary goal was to provide young people with autism and their siblings with equal travel opportunities comparable to their peers. These families often face significant financial burdens due to the costs of autism therapies, making travel an inaccessible luxury. - Promoting Social Inclusion and Self-Esteem: The project sought to break the routine of participants who spend most of their time at home or in day centers. By engaging in this mobility, the aim was to raise their self-esteem, promote responsibility, and foster social interaction and the ability to cope with change. - Learning through Discovery and Life Skill Development: A central objective was to equip youth with valuable life skills and competencies, including travel planning, "money literacy," and multilingual communication. The project emphasized learning through discovery by involving participants in choosing routes and visiting cultural sites. - Reducing Anxiety and Providing Hope: For many families the future is a source of high anxiety. The project aimed to reduce this anxiety by showing both the youth and their parents that they are capable of achieving something unprecedented and that positive, adventurous experiences are possible. - Validating Competencies with Youthpass: The project aimed to help participants recognize and document their growth across all eight European key competencies through the Youthpass certificate, which for many would be their first formal recognition of such skills. - Fostering a Sense of European Belonging: By traveling across borders and using sustainable transport like buses and trains, the project intended to inspire a sense of belonging to the European Union and encourage intercultural dialogue. - Organizational Development: From a youth work practice perspective, the LAA aimed to expand its capacity to support 18-year-olds, a demographic that often lacks access to social and rehabilitation services in Latvia once they reach adulthood.
