Objectives

The Valhalla Youth Exchange was conceived in response to the pressing global challenge of war and conflict, as well as the deep societal divisions exacerbated by social media and geopolitical tensions. In a world increasingly fragmented by contemporary wars—such as those in Ukraine, Gaza, and Israel—and the looming risks of further escalation, we recognized the urgent need to create a space where young people could critically engage with the causes and consequences of war while exploring pathways to peace. The primary aim of the project was to dismantle the myths and stereotypes associated with warfare and hostility by fostering an environment where young people could reimagine conflict resolution through dialogue, experiential learning, and creativity. Through an innovative simulation-based approach, we sought to challenge historical and modern perceptions of war, inviting participants to reflect on their role in shaping a more peaceful future. To achieve this, we set out the following objectives: To illuminate the causes and consequences of war and examine our collective and individual roles in its prevention. To emphasize the importance of youth participation in decision-making processes and encourage civic engagement. To nurture and promote creative thinking, using gamification and non-formal educational methods to explore new perspectives. To empower young people to express their voices through storytelling, role-play, and other creative forms of communication. To facilitate the exchange of experiences, knowledge, and strategies between young people from different cultural and national backgrounds. To foster critical thinking skills, encouraging participants to analyze narratives, challenge biases, and seek constructive solutions. To introduce and disseminate innovative non-formal educational methodologies, particularly those based on live-action role-play (LARP) and simulation-based learning. To enhance cultural awareness and intercultural dialogue, promoting mutual understanding and cooperation among youth from diverse European backgrounds. By bringing together 40 participants from eight different countries (Spain, Croatia, Latvia, Greece, the Netherlands, Poland, Ukraine, and Norway), Valhalla created a unique space where young people could engage in deep, meaningful discussions about war and peace. The immersive structure of the exchange encouraged them to step into the roles of historical warrior groups—Samurai, Vikings, Knights, Spartans, and Aztec Jaguars—only to discover that true honor and wisdom come not from conflict, but from the pursuit of peace. Additionally, Norway was chosen as the project’s host country due to both its strong thematic fit and the expertise of our Norwegian partner in organizing youth projects using LARP and simulation-based learning. Their experience in this field greatly enriched the project and contributed to its success. Ultimately, Valhalla was not just an exploration of history and war—it was a transformative journey that equipped participants with the tools to challenge war-driven narratives, embrace peace-oriented thinking, and take proactive roles in their communities. Through this project, we empowered young people to become advocates of dialogue, understanding, and change in an increasingly polarized world.
