Objectives

The concept of European unity proved increasingly critical after Brexit, with European core values and the benefits of a united continent becoming ever more important. The war in Ukraine reminded Europeans of the common past and the benefits of a united continent that can live in solidarity, peace, and prosperity. To strengthen the links between member states and create connections between citizens, it was essential to raise young people's awareness of the European Union and encourage them to take a more active role in society. Through The European Mindset youth exchange, the project team provided an opportunity for European youth to connect, exchange ideas, and learn about relevant European challenges while developing their skills in a non-formal context. The specific objectives of the project included raising young people's awareness of European core values, the four fundamental freedoms, the EU’s future prospects, the benefits of EU citizenship, and the dangers of a Europe without the EU. The project also helped young people develop competences related to practicing European values through multilingualism, which is one of the core objectives of the Erasmus+ programme and a key competence of such projects. By participating, youngsters became part of a community that placed a strong emphasis on European values, enhancing their openness and acceptance. All workshops and discussions raised awareness of the importance of active European citizenship and inclusive, democratic participation. The main problem addressed by the project was euroscepticism and the lack of active citizenship, which had been noticed in the partner countries and local communities. Previous mobility projects had shown that the lack of active and practical language skills among young people remained an issue. Building on the diversity of the partner team, the project discussed and addressed these challenges during the mobility, thereby serving not only the needs of the participants but also those of Europe as a whole. In terms of youth work practice, the project tackled relevant problems, engaged European youth to act, and built on validated non-formal learning methods. It addressed issues such as the lack of European identity, active citizenship, and democratic participation. The youth exchange facilitated non-formal learning activities that encouraged active participation, real-life simulations, and soft skills development. It also raised awareness of the advantages of being European by fostering intercultural dialogue and learning about fundamental European values. The diverse partnership with organisations from across Europe created a high-quality youth exchange that contributed to more open and tolerant European youngsters by breaking down prejudices and stereotypes. The youth exchange programme contributed to the 11 European Youth Goals by connecting the EU with youth, promoting inclusive societies, fostering information and constructive dialogue, and involving youngsters with fewer opportunities (Space and participation for all). The project provided a quality learning experience through non-formal educational methods, including workshops, debates, role-plays, simulations, and more. Preparations before the exchange ensured that participants’ specific needs were met. Reflection tools were applied to help youngsters get the most out of their learning experience. The follow-up phase, multiplier effects, and honest evaluation were also emphasized to ensure that future youth projects could gain valuable knowledge from the experience.
