EnvironMental Health Labs was created by a group of young leaders in response to the growing mental health challenges faced by young people in Europe, especially those working in the hospitality industry. Most of us had experienced the challenges in working in this industry, especially in the period of our lives when we were only entering the job market, and did not have the skill or confidence level to enter other fields or advance in the hospitality industry career. We experienced the ways this work takes a toll on mental health, and after discussions among ourselves, hearing the stories from young people within our communities, and more research on the topic, we decided to create a project that would serve young people facing these exact challenges, with a general aim to improve their well-being and raise the awareness of these problems in the industry as a whole. Seeing these alarming findings - research shows that mental health issues have worsened significantly in recent years, with suicide the second leading cause of death among youth in Europe, and finding studies that indicate that 85% of hospitality professionals report symptoms of poor mental health, with young people being among the most affected, we realized this is a problem on a large scale. Also through conversations with young people in our communities, we heard multiple stories of long shifts leading to burnout, anxiety, and a lack of career direction leaving many feeling stuck and trapped. Our project followed a four-step approach: Stop. Look. Correct. Take Action. During the preparation stage, we interviewed multiple selected participants to understand best their needs and wishes for the programme, and adapted it accordingly. We began by providing a space for participants to step back from their daily stress (Stop), then guided them through self-reflection and evaluation of their skills and aspirations (Look). Next, we helped them discover their strengths, shift to a growth mindset and get inspired from one another through sharing their stories (Correct), and then encouraging them to take proactive steps towards personal and professional development (Take Action). By integrating coaching tools, well-being and art-based practices for self reflection, we empowered young hospitality workers to improve their well-being, gain clarity about their future, and create a healthier work-life balance, healthier habits, and/or transition to new opportunities. Additionally, throughout the project young people were involved in the creation of a documentary about mental health and burnout, with people sharing their stories, reflecting on their own path, and sharing a message they wish others to hear. EnvironMental Health Labs youth exchange had one general and one concrete objective: *Concrete: by the end of the project, to empower 48 young people to better take care of their mental wellbeing, while learning about themselves and crafting strategies for their future professional growth. Their professional and personal growth and learning is reflected in the YouthPass certificate. *General: To raise awareness on the topic of youth mental health in the hospitality industry in Europe, engaging in discussions with more than 3000 young people online and offline. Offering best practices from the field in a simple and accessible way. The objectives were reached by implementing the project activities in all stages (preparation, mobility and follow-up), and the general objective will continue to be met, extending beyond the project’s timeline, as the documentary was shown at our local communities, and will continue to be showcased both online and at offline events, inspiring and empowering young people at risk of burnout.
