The “Evje Adventure: Empowering Youth Through Outdoor Education and Cultural Exchange” project was designed to create a meaningful, inclusive, and developmental experience for young people with diverse backgrounds living in Norway — particularly refugees and local youth. The project’s main objective was to foster social inclusion, intercultural understanding, and personal growth through shared outdoor learning experiences, teamwork, and non-formal education. Our starting point was a clear recognition of the barriers many young people with immigrant backgrounds face when integrating into Norwegian society. Many experience isolation, language challenges, and limited opportunities for meaningful social participation. At the same time, local Norwegian youth often have limited intercultural exposure. The project therefore aimed to bridge these divides by creating a safe, inclusive arena where young people could learn together, build friendships, and develop vital life skills. The overarching objectives were: Foster inclusion and community belonging: Create an environment where all participants — regardless of nationality, background, or socioeconomic situation — feel valued, included, and part of a collective community. By mixing groups of Norwegian and Ukrainian youth, the project aimed to reduce social distance and encourage mutual understanding. Promote intercultural dialogue and understanding: Facilitate exchanges and learning moments that build respect for diversity and awareness of cultural differences. Through workshops, shared meals, and group activities, participants learned to communicate across cultures and overcome stereotypes. Develop key life and social competences: Strengthen participants’ communication, collaboration, problem-solving, and leadership skills through hands-on learning in a non-formal setting. Outdoor challenges and creative workshops were designed to develop resilience, confidence, and teamwork. Encourage active participation and civic engagement: Empower youth to take responsibility and contribute actively to their surroundings — not just as participants, but as co-creators of a positive, inclusive community. Promote environmental awareness and sustainable values: Integrating environmental learning at Tonstadli, participants gain practical experience in eco-friendly practices and sustainable living, encouraging responsible attitudes toward nature and the planet. Enhance well-being and mental health: The project aimed to improve psychological well-being by offering meaningful social interaction, physical activity, and creative expression in a supportive and natural environment. In sum, the project sought to combine integration, personal development, and environmental awareness through a structured, experience-based learning process. Aligning closely with the Erasmus+ Youth objectives and the EU Youth Goals by strengthening inclusion and diversity, supporting personal and social development, and fostering participation in civic and community life. The ultimate aim was to empower young people to see themselves as active contributors to their society — confident, cooperative, and aware of their ability to build bridges across cultural, linguistic, and social boundaries.
