By implementing the project “With Europe in the Heart – Young Ecomobilers”, the organization sought to provide young people with fewer opportunities with a safe and supportive space for personal, social, civic, and citizenship development through participation in long-term educational mobility experiences under DiscoverEU. Our overarching goal was to enable participants to experience Europe as a tangible, accessible, and diverse community rather than an abstract concept, and to demonstrate that travel, learning, and personal growth are possible regardless of social background or financial circumstances. The project primarily aimed to strengthen young people’s social competences, including team cooperation, communication, responsible decision-making, and the ability to cope with unpredictable situations requiring flexibility and adaptability. Every stage of the project — from preparation, through mobility activities, to dissemination — was designed as a coherent process of experiential learning, discovery, and reflection, reinforcing the educational and cognitive dimension of all undertaken actions. A key objective was also the development of intercultural competences. Through direct exposure to Europe’s cultural diversity, interactions with local communities in visited countries, and everyday functioning in an international context, participants practiced openness, tolerance, dialogue, and respect for different traditions, languages, lifestyles, and ways of thinking. The project supported the formation of responsible European citizenship attitudes and strengthened participants’ sense of belonging to the European community. Another important goal was to enhance organizational and digital competences. Young people were actively involved in planning mobility routes, using digital tools and travel platforms, managing budgets, and making logistical decisions, which reinforced their independence, self-efficacy, and sense of responsibility. These activities were preceded by organizational meetings and preparatory training, aligned with the project’s core assumptions. Environmental education and the promotion of sustainable mobility constituted a crucial pillar of the project. By traveling by train, making conscious transport choices, participating in workshops on ecology and low-budget sustainable travel, and engaging in pro-environmental activities, participants increased their awareness of the environmental impact of daily decisions and developed responsible, low-emission lifestyle habits. The carefully structured learning process allowed participants to gradually and consciously build competences through real-life, everyday challenges faced during the project. Learning was not limited to isolated activities, but took place continuously through planning, decision-making, analyzing experiences, and jointly discussing challenges and successes. A strong emphasis was placed on individual and group reflection, helping young people to recognize their own development, better understand their emotional responses, and draw meaningful conclusions from lived experiences. As a result, participants not only gained new skills but also learned how to transfer them to other areas of life — education, social relationships, and future planning, contributing to the sustainability of learning outcomes and strengthening their agency, resilience, and readiness for new challenges. The project also aimed to support youth mental wellbeing, foster self-confidence, and break down emotional and social barriers. Through continuous mentor support, clearly defined safety procedures, and a needs-centered approach, young people were able to engage in challenges safely and develop at their own pace. In summary, the project’s purpose was to provide holistic support for young people in developing key life, social, and civic competences, to broaden their educational and developmental opportunities, and to prepare them for conscious, responsible, and active participation in Europe and beyond.
