Objectives

The project addresses the considered barriers that young people face in Fundão, a geographic region isolated in the interior of Portugal. The barriers are geographical isolation, economic disadvantages, and limited exposure to international opportunities that restrict young people from participating in EU mobility programs and engaging in civic and democratic processes. It empowers those young citizens by enabling them to participate in an international mobility experience, thanks to the DiscoverEU initiative, which contributes to a better knowledge of European democratic values, more civic participation, and personal and intercultural development. The current project will provide an opportunity for 25 young people from Fundão, all with fewer opportunities, to take part in an enriching learning process related to democracy, civic engagement, and European citizenship. It specifically targets young people who have been facing difficulties in geographical, economic, social, or cultural terms in taking part in international activities and gives them instruments for overcoming these obstacles so as to be more active at a local and European level. The project objectives are hereby highlighted: Connect young people with the democratic values and heritage of Europe, by visiting five historical cities, ensuring that participants demonstrate increased understanding regarding European democracy through assessments by the end of the project. Increase youth civic participation among the participants in democratic processes by empower participants with civic skills through non formal education with the goal of all participants to carry out a civic action in their communities after the mobility Raise awareness about EU values, human rights and democracy through non formal activities such that 80% of participants, in post-project evaluations, report knowing more about human rights and principles of EU than in the pre-project evaluation Promote intercultural dialogue by facilitating participants' interactions with different cultures, coming from different backgrounds, and ensure that participants take part in discussions about cultural diversity, with this develop personal growth, independence and intercultural sensitivity. Facilitate an international mobility experience for 25 young people from Fundão, with at least 10 participants embarking on their first-ever international trip Encourage participants to take part in at least 5 civic initiatives post-mobility 3 months after the mobility, with the goal of 80% of participants actively applying their newly acquired civic skills while involving 100 other young people in the process through workshops. The methodology will be based on non-formal education principles, peer-led discussions, and experiential learning during the visits in the five European cities. Daily reflection and journaling will supplement these techniques to provide the possibility for the participants themselves to follow civic engagement throughout the project At the local level, the project will contribute to higher participation in EU programs such as DiscoverEU and to more intensive civic involvement of young people in the town of Fundão. On a national scale, this will contribute to the improvement of extremely low rates of civic participation amongst youngsters in Portugal concerning democratic processes and elections. Internationally, the project contributes to a better sense of EU citizenship. They will return to their respective communities, better prepared to contribute toward the democratic processes for shaping the future of their societies From the perspective of a youth work practice, this project is in line with the European Youth Golas: it contributes to developing inclusive societies (EYG 1), gives opportunities for youth participation (EYG 3), and creates space and opportunity for youth (EYG 4). The impact of the project will be an environment given to young people for taking time and space to reflect on European values, to learn through non-formal methods, and to develop key competences-for instance, critical thinking, civic engagement, and intercultural communication The Youthpass certificate will make sure participants reflect on and document their progresses in the 8 key competencies so that the learning outcomes become recognizable, and transferable to other future opportunities. This project will contribute to their personal development, give them a greater sense of responsibility and independence, and entrust them with practical skills concerning problem-solving, teamwork, and leadership This project will go to the core of needs concerning youth in Fundão by preparing these young people with the competencies that would enable them to overcome obstacles and become civically and democratically active at a European level. It will provide them with the necessary skills beyond the duration of this project to ensure positive impacts within their local communities and Eu arenas
