Our organization wanted to implement "Embark on the Cultural Express" project because we consider that traveling offers far more than the opportunity to visit new places—it creates pathways for personal growth, intercultural understanding, and increased well-being. Through this project, we aimed to harness the transformative potential of travel and make it accessible to young people from Harghita County, particularly those facing fewer opportunities. Although DiscoverEU is designed as an inclusive initiative, many young people in our community remain hesitant to participate. This is often due to a lack of awareness about the benefits of train travel—such as its environmental sustainability, accessibility, and unique experiential value—but also because of deeper barriers. Social, economic, and geographic challenges, combined with limited knowledge of travel logistics (ticket booking, route planning, language barriers), can make international mobility seem intimidating and unattainable. Based on our experience working with local youth, we identified a clear need to support young people with fewer opportunities in developing initiative, intercultural awareness, and confidence to access Erasmus+ learning opportunities. This project was designed as a response to these needs. At participant level, the project aimed to: - Help young people understand how travel can contribute to their personal and professional development - Support them in planning meaningful and intentional travel experiences - Broaden their perspectives and increase awareness of educational opportunities within the Erasmus+ Programme - Strengthen their sense of initiative and autonomy - Familiarize them with key Erasmus+ priorities: inclusion and diversity, environmental sustainability, digital transformation, and active participation - Reduce financial barriers to participation - Introduce Youthpass as a tool for recognizing and valuing their learning outcomes At organizational level (ARAO), the project aimed to: - Provide high-quality, non-formal learning experiences for local youth - Encourage participation of young people with fewer opportunities in Erasmus+ activities - Improve our capacity to support disadvantaged youth effectively - Strengthen our network of engaged young people and volunteers within the youth sector The objectives reached through this project are: - 15 young people with fewer opportunities were motivated and guided to explore perspectives beyond their local environment and engage with European opportunities - 15 young participants with fewer opportunities were equipped with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to plan and undertake environmentally responsible and educational travel experiences - we promoted intercultural dialogue and deepen understanding of key themes such as sustainability, smart cities, cultural diversity, and active citizenship among 15 young people with fewer opportunities. Through the three mobility activities organized—focused on green lifestyles, smart cities, and cultural diversity—the project provided concrete learning contexts in which participants could explore these themes in real-life settings. By the end of the project, we contributed to the empowerment of 15 young participants with fewer opportunities to become more confident, informed, and proactive individuals, capable of shaping their own futures while actively engaging with European values and opportunities.
