Objectives

Through the Youth Exchange “(RE)Defining Equality 2025”, we aimed to empower young people to become competent, sustainable, and proactive change-makers. The project sought to raise awareness by engaging participants with the complex issues of (in)equality and intersectionality, encouraging them to explore these both theoretically and through their own lived experiences. By bringing together youth from diverse national and cultural backgrounds, our goal was to foster intercultural learning and reflection. Participants were encouraged to examine their own positionality, challenge assumptions, and build a nuanced understanding of inclusion, discrimination, and systemic inequality. We designed the exchange to be a space where identities could be explored and renegotiated in relation to the broader group—strengthening intercultural competence and encouraging empathy. A key objective was to develop participants’ sense of personal agency. Through non-formal education methods—such as simulations, collaborative group work, and reflective activities—they built essential skills in communication, cooperation, and critical thinking. These experiences helped them to become independent problem-solvers, more aware of their ability to take action in their communities. We also aimed to equip participants with the tools and knowledge to analyse challenges in their local contexts and to identify meaningful, achievable ways to address them. By engaging with real-world issues and peer experiences, they developed a deeper understanding of how global dynamics of inequality can be approached through local initiatives. This global-local connection was essential to cultivating a sense of proactive citizenship and responsibility. The programme specifically focused on providing practical skills for asset-based project development. One of our key goals was for participants to leave not only with new perspectives, but also with concrete ideas and strategies for social change. These included foundational tools for designing their own initiatives, along with the capacity to reflect, practice self-care, and sustain their motivation over time. We believe friendships built across borders are crucial to a peaceful and inclusive future. The network of changemakers formed through this exchange is one of the long-term impacts we hoped to achieve—allowing participants to support each other beyond the project’s timeline. Trust in their own idealism and ability to create meaningful change was a core message throughout. On a local level, the project aimed to strengthen the image of an inclusive, diverse, and engaged community that could serve as a model for others. By encouraging participants to apply their learning at home, we hoped to multiply the project’s impact through grassroots action and shared inspiration. Ultimately, our objective was to influence young people at a formative stage of their personal development—encouraging them to strive for social justice with a strong awareness of intersectional structures, global interdependence, and the importance of sustainability in shaping a better future.
