"EU Needs YOU!" is a Training Course project bringing together a total of 40 youth workers from 5 different EU member and candidate states across the continent. Its main goal is to act as a cohesive crash-course regarding active citizenship, participatory democracy, the importance of voting, and the functioning of the EU towards youth workers, in order for them to better understand values and somewhat complex decision making process of the Union, with the goal being to have a stronger impact and make their voices better heard by policymakers and governmental institutions. By learning how they can influence and even propose policies, we aim at empowering our youth workers in fighting for defending the rights and improving the overall situation of their communities, raising awareness about additional tools they have at their disposal in order to start social movements, with one example of them being the European Citizens' Initiative. The selected consortium members stem from different categories of activity, with some organizations being vocal about Environmental Conservation, others offering legal counseling and protection of Refugee Rights, and other acting as Student Representation bodies. The common denominator between the organizations involved being that they all act in disadvantaged areas of their countries and their work is strongly affected by political factors, which may seem out of their control. Through taking part in this Training Course, the youth workers involved will get a better understanding over how this political system works, as well as what opportunities are given by EU backed programmes in order for them to increase their efficiency and make their positions heard, both within their community and towards policymakers. We will undergo an intense 9 day course where we will explore tools of direct democratic participation, as well as funding mechanisms set in place by EU structural funds in order to support NGOs and communities alike in their endeavors, such as Horizon Europe, ECI, the Erasmus+ Framework and much more. With our project emphasizing on creating a stronger level of expertise for youth workers when working with young people over such topics, as well as instilling them with the principles and core values the EU has been built upon, we are concentrating a crucial aspect of our Training Course - the Dissemination Campaign - to bring youth workers closer to young people, giving them hands-on experience when working with this demographic, by conducting informational sessions linked to our topic of discussion, thus bridging the gap between formal and non-formal learning, educating youth, particularly in their terminal years of highscool over the importance of voting and active citizenship, as well as what the EU is, what brings its partner nations together, and how they can make use of opportunities set forth by it in order to improve their professional lives. In this mode, we will reach out to an approximate number of 500 students within the last 2 years of their highschool. This specific age group has been selected due to them just now gaining the right to vote, following John Dewey's quote "Democracy is a habit, practice it." By encouraging this demographic to make use of their vote, we are addressing the widespread issue of lack of involvement within the democratic process of the 18-25 y.o. age group, which in turn has the spillover effect that policymakers tend to overlook this segment of population, given that votership support does not stem enough for them in order to justify allocation of resources or beneficial policies. This can be detrimental to the future of young people, leading to a vicious circle of even more political disengagement, leading to feelings of hopelessness or even risk of radicalization. This phenomena can be countered by introducing the importance of active democratic participation already from a young age. Furthermore, particularly this segment of youth is at risk of falling under the NEETS category - as such, by introducing them to further opportunities they have after highschool we wish to encourage them in continuing their life-long learning process through various EU sponsored programmes, combat school abandonment, and introduce them even to the field of youth work, highlighting how they can involve themselves in the betterment of their society. An additional point we are addressing through our Training Course is the phenomena of Euroscepticism, whereby the 2024 EU Parliament elections have shown a rise in popularity for this movement. The way we aim to combat this is by presenting how communities can improve their situation by making use of EU backed tools, as well as highlight the freedoms and opportunities they have due to this Alliance. As such, "EU Needs YOU!" is a T.C. aiming to promote the values of active citizenship and participative democracy, showcasing the modus operandi of the EU and how youth workers can involve themselves in it.
