Objectives

With the implementation of the project, our aim was to bring the European Union closer to young people in Lower Austria in a direct and experience-oriented way. The focus lay on strengthening political awareness, fostering democratic competences, and deepening the understanding of the functioning and significance of the European Union. It was important to us to create low-threshold access that went beyond theoretical knowledge and enabled young people to experience European politics first-hand. The project sought to make the central institutions of the EU and their decision-making processes comprehensible, while also highlighting the tangible relevance of European politics for everyday life. At the same time, the journey was meant to illustrate that the European Union is not only a political and economic construct, but also a peace and future project that is of crucial importance, especially in times of global crises, climate change, and digitalization. Another essential concern was to highlight opportunities for youth participation and to convey the experience that their voices matter and that they can actively contribute to shaping Europe. Through encounters and discussions with decision-makers, practitioners, and experts, young people were given space to ask questions, exchange opinions, and experience politics on an equal footing. Furthermore, the project was designed to achieve lasting impact: participants were encouraged to share the impressions, insights, and motivation they gained through the activities with their schools, communities, and peer groups. In this way, the reach would extend beyond the immediate project group and generate a multiplying effect. Overall, our goal with the project was to ensure that young people do not perceive Europe as an abstract construct, but as a living reality that affects their own lives and that they can actively help to shape. In doing so, the project contributed to strengthening democratic education, fostering a European identity, and encouraging long-term youth engagement with the European idea.
