Objectives

By implementing the youth exchange “Cultures in Sync”, we aimed to create a meaningful space where young people from Belgium, Curaçao, and Georgia could come together to better understand each other’s realities and challenge cultural stereotypes and discrimination they experience in their daily lives. The project was designed in response to shared challenges faced by young people in all partner countries such as limited participation opportunities, socio-economic difficulties, feelings of isolation, and uncertainty about their future. These issues are often increased for youth growing up in rural areas, migrant communities, facing geographical barriers, or living in economically disadvantaged environments. Many of the participants had little chance to travel or engage with people from different backgrounds, which can unintentionally reinforce narrow perspectives and limit openness toward diversity. Through the exchange and follow-up activities, we wanted to support young people in stepping outside of their usual social and cultural environments. The project sought to strengthen their understanding of diversity not as a source of division, but as an opportunity for learning, cooperation, and personal growth. More specifically, the objectives of the project were: • to explore cultural diversity through delving into various cultural dimensions, including languages, folklore, traditions, and social norms, highlighting both similarities and differences between participating countries and communities; • to emphasize the importance of diversity and what it means for young people, providing strategies for inclusive practices and actively addressing discrimination against minorities; • to enhance the intercultural competence of young people by developing intercultural communication skills to foster understanding, respect, and cooperation among different cultures; • to address discrimination and conflict by identifying causes as well as discussing best practices existing in each country for intercultural cooperation and mutual help between different communities and brainstorming on the ways of their enhancement. The project particularly focused on young people with fewer opportunities, including those from migrant backgrounds, rural regions, or socially disadvantaged neighborhoods. By bringing them together in a supportive non-formal learning setting, we aimed to empower them to reflect on their identities, build confidence in interacting across cultures, and feel more capable of contributing to inclusive communities at home. The intention was not only to promote intercultural understanding during the mobility itself, but also to inspire continued engagement after the exchange, encouraging participants to carry forward the values of diversity, inclusion, and cooperation within their local contexts.
