Objectives

Be.wilder was a youth exchange for 20 youngsters from Belgium and Denmark, combining bushcraft and the arts. The project responded to a growing call of youth to feel connected to their natural and social environments and live a sane, simpler, and more conscious life with a smaller ecological footprint. The aims were for participants to feel comfortable in nature, interact with their natural environment with more respect, and lead a meaningful human existence. The name Be.wilder is a call to "be wilder" and "bewilder". It refers to the combination of (1) bushcraft, which aims to live a responsible life with respect to Earth's wilderness, and (2) arts, which is known to bewilder the senses and give people new and meaningful experiences. The objectives of Be.wilder were (1) to cultivate ecological responsibility, (2) develop aesthetic awareness, (3) dive into stories, and (4) bond across borders (of countries, of the human-nature divide, and professional disciplines). 1/ The program focuses on outdoor abilities like shelter building and foraging, promoting self-sufficiency and a profound understanding of the natural world. 2/ We integrate aesthetic awareness by recognising the beauty in functional activities and encouraging sensory experiences to enhance daily connections with the environment. 3/ Be.wilder seeks to develop storytelling skills, empowering participants to craft narratives that redefine human relationships with the living world, bridging the gap between imagination and ecological consciousness. 4/ The project also aims to establish connections across borders - beyond human identity to encompass all living creatures, merging disciplines like bushcraft and arts, and fostering relationships among youth from different countries, emphasising the transformative impact of international collaboration on friendships and future professional connections.
