Objectives

Women are still over-represented in lower-paid sectors, have less economic freedom, are underrepresented in decisionmaking positions and are violated in rights and physically, according to the European Commission, making it one of Europe's top objectives to fight for. One crucial topic that may arise is: how is outdoor related to gender? We believe that simulation with outdoor elements (during the YE, we will apply hiking and many outdoor education techniques) will generate a more attractive circle because of its universality. From the beginning of the interaction, participants will be exposed to simple questions of, food supply, cleanliness and common ground norms in the form of a outdoor experience. To illustrate prevalent ideas of gender roles and bias, the YE will simulate the establishment of a new society by placing participants in a position where roles, tasks and responsibilities must be created and agreed upon in a gender-sensitive manner. As a result, the project will take the form of an outdoor society experience in which everyday survival duties must be completed as well as hard challenges. Workshops on gender equality, simulation exercises and role plays will provide conditions and an atmosphere in which new ideas for a more equal existence for men and women can be developed. As a result, over the period of the YE, we will ask young people from eight nations to participate in the challenging process of developing a gender equal society. To add to the intrigue, the YE will take place in Dymes, Cyprus mountain region, which offers a wide range of outdoor activities. We see outdoor education as a very powerful tool for development, especially within international communities, because it reflects different values and can build a bridge between different social groups, forming better mutual understanding. Most non-formal education methods will be done outside and we will use hiking as a powerful individual & group tool because self-preservation instincts are reduced, making it easier to analyse sensitive topics. We will directly compare it to the current situation, in which many women and men refugees have had to go across mountains, traverse seas and cross borders to find peace in Europe. We'll do something similar to put ourselves in their shoes for a bit. We feel that by using this correlation, we will be able to achieve even better outcomes and begin to think about the current situation. With the youth exchange, we hope to inspire young people to consider alternatives to current social ideas of women's and men's roles, and to consider how they may contribute to a more equitable world in which women have the same freedom as men. Based on these two primary objectives, one can readily connect the project to the EU's fundamental values and the concept of gender equality, which is an important concept not only inside the EU but also in the universal declaration of human rights. Gender equality is far from a reality in and outside of the EU, and our participants must build a sense of duty and commitment as active citizens to put what is written in documents and international treaties into practice in their daily interactions. Participants will learn that every human-made restriction, social norm, or cultural value can be changed by demonstrating that they can create their own rules for interaction. It is their responsibility as future leaders of their communities to shape the way we live together and make their countries a place where gender equality can be enjoyed by all. All they have to do is challenge their social surroundings with fresh ideas about how communities might organise their lives and practice gender-sensitive interaction outside of predetermined gender norms in their personal relationships. As responsible citizens of our community, active citizenship involves living what we believe in and taking action for what we believe in. Nobody will do it for ourselves, our friends, and family members if we do not take the initiative.
