Objectives

The CIRKbeing project is a series of youth exchanges for young students from four circus organisations. Its main aim is to connect young people from different countries and to enable them to share their enthusiasm for contemporary circus and related activities. At the same time, we perceive the environment in which the circus activities take place as safe enough to raise issues concerning the psychological well-being of young people. Against the backdrop of the youth circus community, we thus want to look for ways to open up discussion about how the young participants in our courses feel, what helps them to better understand their thoughts and emotions, and how the circus environment helps them to find inner balance. Each of the participating organisations is active in circus pedagogy, a pedagogical trend that uses circus arts as a tool for multifaceted personal development. It bases its approach on the principles of experiential learning, emphasises confidence building and promotes an active and healthy lifestyle. Circus skills are used as a tool to develop and meet the needs of children and adolescents (to take risks, to be seen, to trust and to dream). Many of the approaches and tools of circus pedagogy are inspired by a free, natural, active and individual approach aimed at the all-round development of children. The main content of circus pedagogy is then circus disciplines such as juggling, aerial acrobatics, ground acrobatics, tightrope walking, ball balancing, unicycle riding, as well as clowning and acting. Circus activities are the main means of this project, which aims not only to share the enthusiasm for training in circus disciplines and the benefits derived from it, but above all to find a safe environment to open a dialogue between tutors and participants on the topic of the psychological well-being (or discomfort) of young people. One of the key tools introduced in this project is the reflective card method, which serves as a medium for reflection and feedback in both individual and group training sessions. The goal is not just to use these cards but to collaboratively create new, functional tools that facilitate feedback and reflection. This process involves identifying which feelings the circus environment evokes in different situations, whether these feelings are helpful or challenging, and how they shape the participants’ experiences. As part of the project, participants will work together to design a deck of reflective cards that will be used for reflection, feedback, and pedagogical purposes. The cards will be co-created, from formulating their content to designing their visual appearance. Ultimately, this deck will be made freely available for broader use in similar educational settings. The project is structured around four one-week international exchanges, each focusing on circus skills, team building, and culminating in a final presentation. The exchanges will provide opportunities to solidify relationships, share experiences, and refine the reflective card method, all while reinforcing the psychological and emotional growth of the participants. MEETING YOURSELF in the sense of getting to know others, but also getting in touch with yourself. What are my limits, what am I good at. What does it mean for me to feel good and how to achieve this feeling through circus. FINDING YOUR BALANCE as finding balance literally and figuratively. Using the technique of funambulism, we will focus on finding the calm and focus to overcome long routes of tightrope. Similarly, we will work intensively on what calm means to us and how to stay focused in difficult situations in and out of the circus environment. SUPPORT, trust and care is primarily reflected in circus disciplines in spotting, assistance and communication during acrobatic acts. We will learn the importance of fulfilling these functions in a group and that each of us is needed in certain exercises, even though we are "just" part of the big pyramid. We will open up a similar theme in the context of our mental health: how to help not only ourselves, but others as well. Where and why certain uncomfortable feelings open up for me and how to ask for possible help. FINDING YOURSELF is the final exchange and focuses on closing the project process. Being able to reflect on where I am right now and how far I have come since the first meeting. The culmination of the project will be a site-specific performance in which everyone will figuratively find their place in the community, be able to express themselves freely and experience a final w
