Objectives

The project 'Wear the Future' addressed the growing issue of clothing consumption and textile waste in Europe, where fast fashion drives overconsumption. Europeans buy an average of 26 kilos of clothing each year, discarding 11 kilos, with 87% of this waste ending up in landfills or being incinerated. Fast fashion, accelerated by social media, has significant environmental and social impacts. In response, the EU introduced a 2022 strategy to promote sustainable textiles and circular economy principles. Additionally, the European Parliament has called for stronger measures on human rights, environmental standards, and mandatory textile collection by 2025. This project equipped youth workers from six countries with the knowledge and tools to raise awareness about the challenges facing the European fashion industry. Through an intensive training, participants learned about the environmental effects of fast fashion, the circular economy, and relevant EU policies, such as the 2022 textile strategy. The training also provided youth workers with educational resources from Fashion Revolution's RecyCOOL Academy to help them apply this knowledge in their local communities. The project objectives were: 1) To better understand the process of fast fashion production, its impact on the environment and the concept of circular economy; 2) to review the European legislatives about fashion industry and textiles; 3) To raise awareness about the environmental and human exploitation in fashion industry among the youth workers, their organizations and communities; 4) To understand and promote cultural heritage and craftsmanship as opposed to fast fashion; 5) To foster the attitudes and approaches to oppose throwaway culture and shift to a system where materials are used for longer instead of going to waste; 6) To explore new learning tools and resources that will help the youth workers effectively disseminate the mission of the project; 7) To exercise the youth workers' skills in organizing events to effectively raise awareness about the issue; 8) To build and foster a solid network of new partnerships to tackle the issue on local and international level; 9) To promote European values, such as human rights and diversity among the youth workers, and illustrate them with the example of fashion industry; 10) To promote European opportunities among the participants as well as the local youth who will attend project related events locally.
