Objectives

By implementing the Prague Student Summit project, we aimed to create a stimulating, open and safe space in which young people, i.e. students of secondary and higher education, could learn about the functioning of international organisations, understand the basic principles of international politics and at the same time acquire a number of key civic, social and professional skills in a naturally formative way. The project responded to the increasingly evident sense of alienation of young people from public affairs, whether at the local, national or international level, which is often caused by low levels of confidence in their own ability to influence the world around them, lack of practical experience with democratic processes or the absence of support in their environment. The aim of the project was to actively change this situation - to offer young people concrete tools, opportunities and encouragement to take responsibility for their environment and to become actively involved in the public space. Through simulations of negotiations of international organisations, lectures by experts, thematic workshops, discussions with decision-makers and, above all, through mutual cooperation within the team format of the programme, the participants of the project were able to put themselves in the shoes of diplomats, political representatives or experts. This allowed them not only to understand the complexity of decision-making processes and international negotiations, but also to learn the principles of cultivated discussion, the ability to compromise and respect for different views and experiences. At the same time, we wanted to design the project to have a strongly inclusive dimension. We actively encouraged the participation of male and female students from different regions of the Czech Republic, including smaller towns and rural areas, and we emphasized balanced representation in terms of gender, age and experience with public speaking or involvement in civil society. We believe that it is the diversity of the participant pool that contributes significantly to the individual's ability to take away an experience that is not only professional but also deeply interpersonal. Part of our approach includes an emphasis on building a long-term community that is not limited to a one-off participation in an event, but continues to function - in the form of contacts, collaboration, inspiration and a shared interest in public affairs. In the long term, the project aims to support the formation of a generation of young people who will understand citizenship as an active role, not a passive status, and who will be willing and eager to take responsibility for their surroundings, to change it for the better and not to be afraid to enter the public space - whether as initiating citizens, journalists, municipal councillors, political leaders, or active civil society actors.
