The purpose of this project was to engage Generation Z in a meaningful dialogue about sustainability, leadership and global awareness with a strong focus on the Sustainable Development Goals. Generation Z was addressed in the form of youth councils from five communities (all twin towns of the City of Monheim am Rhein) who came together to discuss “Where Urban Life meets Sustainable Dreams” from a youth perspective. By building and enhancing their civic engagement, participants were empowered to initiate and pursue communal future-oriented projects of their own while acting as part of larger movement with the Sustainable Development Goals in mind. The project aimed at counteracting the lack of youth involvement in decision-making processes, the need for greater awareness of global challenges and the importance of fostering leadership skills among young people. Simultaneously, the project addressed the youth workers supervising and supporting the youth councils and thereby the municipal youth departments of all partner organizations that embed international youth work to varying degrees in their work. The projects aimed at bringing international youth work into focus and emphasize its importance for the future generation. The primary objectives were to: • Empower young people to become active leaders and change-makers in their communities • Promote awareness and understanding of the SDGs and how they can be implemented locally and globally • Foster collaboration and cultural exchange among youth from diverse backgrounds • Encourage innovative thinking and creative problem-solving to address global challenges • Cultivate professional exchange in terms of knowledge, methodological tools and youth work structure among the accompanying youth workers • Strengthening the bond between the twin towns and building a European, international network of youth councils and youth departments
